Queen[1] Twilight Sparkle is the current Matriach of Equestria and the 4th and so far final of the princesses. Originally from the capital city of Canterlot, Twilight Sparkle passed the entrance exam at Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns and became the protege of Princess Celestia. After going to Ponyville to help plan the Summer Sun Celebration, Twilight was revealed to be the Element of Magic and became a founding member of the Mane Six.
History
Early years
Twilight Sparkle was born in Canterlot[2] and grew up in a household with her parents Twilight Velvet, Night Light and her older brother, Shining Armor.[3] After the Summer Sun Celebration, Twilight grew enamored with Princess Celestia and studied hard to become a student at Princess Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns. Though she didn't initially past, due to the boost by the Sonic Rainboom, she managed to gain a surge of magic and hatched Spike from his egg and became the official protege of Princess Celestia at the school.[4]
Spike eventually went to live with Twilight at her house and would often join her and Shining Armor as they compete for the title of "Sibling Supreme", which Shining Armor ultimately won from them.[3] She was often babysat by Princess Cadance and the two grew to love each other like family[5] and did many activities together like making macaroni art pieces, which Spike apparently never appreciated.[6]
Teenage and young adult life
Twilight spent her days at Princess Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns, often studying and sometimes hanging out with others. Although characterized as the girl who thought studying was more important than friendship, she actually did manage to accumulate a decent amount of good and caring friends in her life. At her school, she became great friends with Twinkleshine, Minuette and Moon Dancer and to some extent knew Lyra Heartstrings, although they were sometimes annoyed by her constantly studying attitude, they accepted it as a part of who she was.[7] Another friend Twilight had during this time was the kindly old librarian Dusty Pages, who invited Twilight over for tea from time to time.[6]
On the day Twilight left for Ponyville, she forgot to return her copy of Perfection: The Impossible Pursuit, which eventually caused Dusty Pages to retire from her life as a librarian and become a musician instead at Silver Stable Community, something Twilight would later greatly regret, believing she got her fired.[6] during the same day, she forgot to visit Moon Dancer's party, which caused the already insecure unicorn to become a shut in, rarely leaving her house.[7]
Mare of the Moon
Upon seeing a relief on the moon in the shape of Nightmare Moon's, the now fallen sister of Princess Celestia, head, Twilight believed the legendary Mare of the Moon was once again returning to wreak havoc on Equestria. She told her teacher, Princess Celestia, of the situation, though Celestia though she was letting her imagination go wild due to her relative isolation and so sent her to Ponyville to plan for the Summer Sun Celebration. In Ponyville, Twilight met Pinkie Pie, to ran off after seeing her. After Pinkie Pie, she encountered Rainbow Dash who was tasked with the making sure their was clean weather for the event. Later, the unicorn met with Applejack, who had her join brunch with her family. Once she was done there, Twilight entered Ponyville Town Hall to meet with Rarity, a unicorn who Spike fell madly in love with and had Twilight try on many outfits and manestyles. The last pony Twilight met with was Fluttershy, who was to shy in her presence to talk, but had a long and interesting conversation with Spike.
Twilight walked to her place of residence, a library called Golden Oak Library, Fluttershy following her in tow, where she discovered Pinkie Pie had been waiting there planning her a surprise party. Annoyed, Twilight went along with it but let her antisocial nature be known.
That night, she traveled to the celebration only to realize that Nightmare Moon really had returned and kidnapped Celestia. Twilight ran back to the library to search for a book regarding Nightmare Moon while the first ponies she met followed her back. Rainbow Dash believed she was a spy, but the others instead thought she had a plan to save the day with. Together, the six traveled into the Everfree Forest in order to stop Nightmare Moon.
After a series of trials, Twilight grew to trust and respect the ponies, realizing their strengths and personalities more and growing to care about them on a deeper level. By the time they finally got to the Castle of Two Sisters, they used the Elements of Harmony in order to defeat Nightmare Moon by having her returning to her senses and reuniting the two sisters.
Returning back to town, Twilight was welcomed as a hero as she decided to stay in Ponyville and embraced her best friend, Spike.[8]
Early adventures
After arriving in Ponyville, Twilight's life undoubtedly had a massive shift from the (relative) mundanity to a much more adventurous life. During her early days in Ponyville, she had many adventures with her friends. Her first of which seemed to be an incident involving the Grand Galloping Gala. Invited by Princess Celestia, Twilight and one guess were allowed to attend the Grand Galloping Gala, the most famous gathering in Equestria. However, all of Twilight's friends each had their own reason for why they wanted to join Twilight as her plus one. After a day of absolute chaos involving the entire town attempting to hound Twilight for her ticket, Twilight eventually decided to cancel her invitation, only for Celestia to send her tickets for all of her friends, including spike.[9]
Sometime later, Twilight grew increasingly annoyed and worried for Applejack, who had been severely overworking herself as she was to stubborn to accept help on the farm after Big McIntosh got injured. After confronting her friend, Twilight eventually managed to convince Applejack to let her and the rest of the gang help her.[10]
Sometime before Gilda came to town, Twilight found herself at the mercy of Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash's series of pranks where they replaced her ink with invisible ink. When Gilda did arrive, Twilight didn't believe Pinkie Pie when she expressed doubts about Gilda's character, but after first-hoof witnessing how rude and mean Gilda truly was, she apologized to Pinkie.[11]
Twilight received a wake-up call after Trixie Lulamoon had arrived in Ponyville. Before being almost self-destructively humble and unwilling to display her talents and skills, Twilight rarely performed advanced magic in public but after the haughty mare came to town, Spike began to practically beg her to show off her prowess. Eventually, the kind-but-stupid Snips and Snails woke up a Ursa Minor and lured him back to Ponyville since Trixie previously mentioned she defeated one. Twilight was almost scared to fend off the beast but did so anyway to protect her town, though was ashamed that she would've been seen as a show-off, but instead was accepted by the community in spite of her power.[12]
Twilight led the expedition up a large mountain in order to convince a dragon named Razer to leave his roost since his smoke was able to potentially block out the sky of Equestria. The expedition was quite rough - mainly due to Fluttershy's timid and easily-frightened nature. When Twilight eventually confronted Razer, her formal request was denied. Eventually, Razer ended up mildly hurting her and the others when Dash assaulted him, causing Fluttershy to take control of the situation. The adventure taught Twilight to never lose faith in her friends.[13]
Twilight had her first sleepover when Rarity and Applejack both nearly got caught in a violent storm and took refuge in Twilight's house. Though the sleepover was rough, with Rarity and Applejack at each others throats the whole time, though as the night went on, the two grew closer together in order to keep Twilight safe and happy. Later, Twilight wrote to Princess Celestia, chiming in how she realized two ponies with completely different personalities and backgrounds could become genuine friends.[14]
When Zecora the Enchanter came to town for the first time in Twilight's stay, she was scared of the seemingly creepy lady. When Apple Bloom went missing, Twilight and the others went to look for her, only to end up in the Poison Joke, a plant that curses its victims with ironic punishments, with Twilight's punishment being a floppy horn. Being ignorant to the plants nature, Twilight and the others believed that Zecora cursed them herself and the gang went to her hut to confront the enchanter, only to later realize she was a kind, caring Zebra who had befriended Apple Bloom. Even though Twilight and the others thrashed her house, Zecora forgave them and cured them, and Twilight later wrote to Celestia that she learned not to judge ponies by their appearances.[15]
Twilight organized the Welcome Princess Celest festival event, but her planning was ruined by the Parasprites that Fluttershy brought into town. Luckily, Pinkie Pie saved the day and helped make the event more unforgettable for the princess and Twilight.[16]
When Winter Wrap Up rolled around, nopony was as excited for as Twilight was. Waking up in the dead of night to prepare, though Spike was far less enthusiastic about the event. However, as unicorns were rare in Ponyville, the holiday didn't call much more magic in its traditions as ponies manually ended winter. Twilight bumbled around all the teams doing their parts in ending the winter and preparing for Spring, ruining every attempt with her magic and eventually setting the entire town back hours. She eventually learned to use her organization skills instead to help with the holiday and managed to get the entire town back on track and in the process, learning to use said skills in that context in general.[17]
As Apple Bloom grew depressed about not having her own cutie mark, Twilight tried to help her get on in cooking, and later by magic, but of course neither worked out. Twilight later attended Diamond Tiara's Cute-cenera (for some reason) and smiled at Applejack when she saw Apple Bloom make friends with two other cutie-mark ponies, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo.[4]
While Applejack and Rainbow Dash were having a series of competitions to prove who was the true Iron Pony, Twilight Sparkle herself participated in the Running of the Leaves event alongside her two friends. Despite her acknowledged lack of athletic prowess, she did end up getting 5th place, beating her two friends. Later that night, she wrote to Celestia telling her she learned from Dash and Applejack that friendship is always more important than silly competitions.[18]
Sometime afterwards, Twilight had Rarity sew her an astronomical-looking dress, though it, alongside the other dresses Rarity made for the others, were so gaudy that Rarity briefly became a joke in the fashion world. Guilty for their actions, they used the original dresses made for them prior in a later fashion show, causing Rarity to once again become respected.[19]
After witnessing the mysterious Pinkie Sense, Twilight was driven crazy trying to discover the nature of it, believing it to be nothing more than a series of coincidences despite everypony telling her quite the contrary. After the Pinkie Sense caused Twilight much pain, suffering and more pain, the Pinkie Sense predicted that Fluttershy was in danger at the Foggy Bottom Bogg and so Twilight and the others rushed to her aid. Though she seemed fine at first, the Hydra soon attacked them. After escaping the beast, Twilight was informed that the hydra wasn't actually what was setting off the Pinkie Sense, causing her to grow absolutely enraged, but ultimately tired and so she simply moved on, writing to Celestia that there was simply stuff in the world she couldn't scientifically explain - and she was happy about that.[20]
In order to support Rainbow Dash at the Best Young Flyer Competition, Twilight found a spell that could give any pony wings, however, she only managed to cast the spell on Rarity as it was quite complicated, so instead she cast the Cloud Walking Spell on her and her friends so they could watch her at the games. At the games, Twilight cheered on Rainbow Dash, especially after she saved Rarity, whose winged burnt up, causing the Sonic Rainboom as she rescued her friend from falling to her doom.[21]
While heading to the Everfree Forest to get some of her favorite tea from Zecora, Twilight bumped into Fluttershy as she was about to babysit the Crusaders. While in the first, Twilight was turned to stone by Cockatrice, though was later scared by her pegasus friend.[22]
Twilight was a staff member at the Ponyville Talent Show and supported the Crusaders. She was happy to see her young friends express themselves though was confused when she realized they completely missed the point of their own demonstrations, but was happy for them nonetheless.[23]
After Rarity was kidnapped by the Curs, a branch of the Diamond Dogs, Spike alerted Twilight and the others and together they went to look for the creatures. Spike rode Twilight like a horse through their stronghold, but by the time they found Rarity, she had already freed herself using her feminine "charm" on the dogs.[24]
After Fluttershy became a famous model, Twilight was worried if she broke the news that Rarity was annoyed by success that she would lose them as friends.[25]
Later, the girls and Spike took a trip to Appleloosa where they ended up finding themselves torn between a war between the townsfolk and the Buffalo who had already lived there. Though they tried to mediate peace between the two groups, a battle of pies broke out between the two, though peace was quickly restored among the two peoples.[26]
Sometime after the previous event, Fluttershy kidnapped Princess Celestia's pet bird, Philomena, believing the princess was treating it poorly and attempted to nurse it back to health. Twilight tried to cover for Fluttershy but was scared Celestia would banish them if she found out the truth. The two were relieved when not only Philomena turned out to be healthy, but that Celestia knew they only met well.[27]
When the Cutie Mark Crusaders bumped into her, Twilight reminisced about her past.[28]
On the day of the Centennial Celebration, Twilight and Spike packed up various items to take with them as they had a picnic on Centennial Hill with their friends. While setting up, Spike accidentally destroyed a copy of Astronomical Astronomer's Almanac to All Things Astronomy though lied about doing so. On the trip, Spike grew tired from all the work, but was showed much love friend Twilight and the others. After returning, Twilight began to write a report on the event when an owl flew by her house. Fearing the little guy would be cold, she invited him into her house and quickly befriended the foul, naming him Owlowiscious and adopting him as her pet and assasstant. The following day, Spike instantly grew jealous of Owlowiscious and began to plot schemes to get the bird out of his life. However, as his schemes went to far, Twilight denounced him, proclaiming that he was not the Spike she knew and loved, causing the dragon to feel unloved, causing him to runaway. As he wandered into a cave in the Everfree Forest, he was nearly killed by a dragon named Gostir until Twilight and Owlowiscious saved his life. When Twilight realized why he ran away, she embraced him and later, Spike and Owlowiscious became good friends.[29]
Later, Twilight and the others began to plan a secret party for Pinkie Pie, though in the process, they had to refuse to hang out with her on many occasions, making the poor Earth Pony feel left out and grow resentful and miserable. However, she bounced back when she went to their party.[30]
The Changeling war
On an otherwise normal, bright, blue and sunny day, Twilight was eating a picnic with her friends as an exhausted Spike greeted her to deliver good news. A wedding was happening in Canterlot and not only were Twilight and her friends invited, but they were commissioned to be set up the wedding. The news went over well with her friends, Rarity even fainted out of the surprise, but Twilight remained cautious. She didn't even know who was getting married in the first place, until Spike gave her another letter that confirmed that the lucky groom was Shining Armor...Twilight's older brother. Surprisingly, Twilight was furious over this, believing that it was unfair that her brother nve told her he was dating (a fact that would get retconned not to much later.[31]. After breaking out in song, Twilight grows more somber than furious as she begins to truly miss her BBBFF (Big Brother Best Friend Forever). Still, Twilight is still annoyed but her friends rejoiced and Rarity fainted...again.[32]
On the train ride over to Canterlot, Twilight's disposition on the ordeal hasn't really changed much. While not as angry, she was clearly still greatly upset and hurt by her brothers actions. Now in Canterlot, Twilight hardly noticed the Royal Guards, upsetting them as she marched all the way up to her brother and gave him a piece of her mind. As it turned out, Shining Armor was far to busy with maintaining security around Canterlot. Although still upset, Twilight understood but wondered who her brother married. Shining Armor soon informed her that he was marrying Cadance...The Cadance, Twilight's foalsitter and honorary-older sister.[32]
When Twilight finally met up with Cadance, she wasn't like anything Twilight remembered. She was mean, dismissive and uncaring; not like the loving, good-natured and kind mare Twilight knew and loved. Shocked and annoyed by Cadance's turn, Twilight remained grumpy and stone-faced even in what should've been good fun with her dear friends. She didn't engage in the cooking, nor appreciate it and she took away spike's dolls. Twilight would watch angerly as Cadance verbally abused her friends and put down their hard work. Later that night, Twilight tried to discuss Cadance with her friends, but none of them understood what was going on and simply accepted that they were at fault.[32]
Later, Twilight tried to discuss the problem with Shining Armor himself. While Shining was his typically jovial and good-natured self, he couldn't discuss the matters at hand as Cadance called for him. Twilight decided to spy all them to see what would happen. What she saw shocked her. Shining Armor, if just for a brief second grew angry at Cadance but Cadance struck her with some sort of green magical beam, demobilizing him and turning him into some sort of mindless slave. Twilight immediately ran for help and soon came across the girls. The girls however, were now Cadance's bridesmaids and didn't listen to Twilight. Later, at the practice ceremony, Twilight finally snapped and announced to everypony at the ceremony that Cadance was evil. After a long series of accusations, Cadance ran off crying as even Shining Armor grew angry at Twilight. The rest of her friends, and even Princess Celestia all grew distant from Twilight, leaving her alone. Now all alone and crying, Cadance approached Twilight and gently rested her hoof on her head. With a sinister glare and green, evil magic, Cadance banished Twilight to the Crystal caverns as so she wouldn't interrupt her plans.[32]
In a cave with her reflection as her only company, Twilight was solemn and miserable, but was soon tormented by the refletion of "Cadance". Before long, Twilight ame in contact with the real Cadance, but still believed her to be evil. She tackled down the alicorn and threatened her, but once Cadance proved herself, Twilight was far more sympathetic and hugged her honorary sister. The two mares searched for an exit, the real Cadance lamented that she wanted the day to be perfect, not just for herself but for her friends and family. Weakened, Cadance struggled to move a cart, though Twilight used her magic to help her out. Soon, the two embarked on an adventure to exit the caves. The two were confronted by Changelings in the guises of Lyra Heartstrings, Twinkleshine and Minuette but they were soon outsmarted. Before long, Twilight and Cadance managed to interrupt the wedding. Enraged, the fake Cadance revealed herself to be Queen Chrysalis in disguise.[32]
Chrysalis quickly established herself to be a truly serious threat. Celestia stepped up to battle Chrysalis to protect her ponies, but Chrysalis quickly disposed of her. Twilight ran to check if her mentor was alright but was forced to retreat. Now outside Canterlot castle, Twilight realized the forcefield created to keep the Changelings out was beginning to shatter. Soon, it was completely demolished as an army of Changelings flooded the city. Ready for the battle of their lives, the Mane Six valiantly stood and fought, even as the Changelings changed into the girls to perpetuate confusion. Proving their mettle, the girls effortlessly defeated the Changelings with Twilight even physically overpowering a number of them by her lonesome and defeated more with her magic. Even though they went done easily, the Changelings had an advtanage—numbers and before long they overwhelmed the heroes.[32]
All but conquered, Canterlot see's arguably its darkest hour in history (besides arguably the Invasion of Canterlot) as many of the guards and civilians were defeated and disposed of. Twilight managed to free Cadance who fearlessly stood down Chrysalis despite being outmatched in all ways. Cadance's love for Shining Armor was so great however, that it managed to overpower Chrysalis's spell. With the power of true love, Cadance and Shining Armor managed to defeat Chrysalis once and for all as the Changelings were blasted away into the sunset.[32]
Last days of the simple life
Early reign
On the day of Twilight's first Princess Summit, she was accompanied by her dearest friends who helped her with her luggage. After a display of sisterly love from her friends, Twilight and her friends enter the ever-beautiful Crystal Castle. While in awe of her welcoming, Twilight accidentally bumped into a Royal Guard named Flash Sentry. The guard proves himself to be an amiable and friendly fellow. Soon afterwards, Twilight was greeted by her fellow alicorns who gave her a warm welcome. As it's getting late, the princesses decided to postpone the summit until the next day so Twilight and her friends can get some much needed rest. Now in her designated room, Twilight peered into a mirror with concern dripping from her eyes. After a brief discussion about her being a leader with Spike, Twilight was soothed into sleep by the warm and caring words of her number one assistant. Her sleep wasn't long-lasted however, as almost instantly, her wings began to twitch and fully erect themselves. Regardless, she managed to get some rest after some time and entered a deep sleep.[33]
As Twilight was sleeping, a thief unicorn broke into the castle and sneaked her way into Twilight's room. Using her magic, the thief managed to steal Twilight's crown and replace it with a new one. She would'v gotten away with it too, if she hadn't tripped on Spike's tail. Twilight chased after the thief, and soon all of her friends joined in. Twilight gave a valiant effort and even managed to teleport in front of her, but the thief outmaneuvered her. Eventually, the crown bounced into a mirror, transporting it to another world. The thief then traveled into the mirror as well, leaving the universe behind her. The ponies had no choice but to wake up the princesses.
Twilight and friends relayed what happened with Princess Celestia and her fellow alicorns. Celestia told Twilight and the others of her former student, Sunset Shimmer, who grew cruel and dishonest[note 2] Spike showed Celestia Twilight's fake crown while Twilight was still ashamed of what transpired only hours ago. Luna told Twilight of the nature of the mirror, how it's a portal to another world. Worried for her safety, Cadance told Twilight that she must go through the mirror into the other world if she wished to retrieve her crown and the element of magic once again. With only two nights to spend in the world, Twilight valiantly charged towards the mirror. Her friends tried to go with her, but Celestia told them only Twilight must go. In spite of her warnings, Spike charged in after her and charged into the mirror.
Upon entering the new world, Twilight could hardly focus on anything. She felt her body stretch and flip as she fell through some mysterious vortex. She could hear her friends calling in worry for Spike, but she couldn't figure out why, she couldn't even focus on what was happening to her, let alone her friends. She soon found herself in a grassy field and discovered Spike had turned into a dog, but he didn't know what she became. Freaking out noticing all of her new body parts like weird, fleshy appendages with five digits each and long, slender legs while lacking a muzzle, Twilight freaked out, twice, but was eventually calmed down by Spike.
Confused by their new world, they decided to start searching around. After spotting a "castle" in the distance, they decided to check that out first. Twilight picked up Spike on her back and darted towards the "castle" on all-fours. After spotting a student walking a dog, Spike realized Twilight wasn't doing it right. Twilight attempted to look more "normal", though the student didn't seem to mind on way or another. Soon afterwards, Twilight struggled to walk up the stairs into the 'castle' and desperately tried to open the door. She tried to walk through it, to use magic to open it with nothing working. Realizing she had no magic in this world, nor a horn, she began to pull her hair out in frustration, thankfully she had Spike by her side, who simply opened the door for her.
Now inside the 'castle', Twilight looked into a window to see a reflection of herself, only to be mortified by what she saw. While examining herself, Twilight was approached by Rainbow Dash who asked her if she was checking out her trophies. Twilight jumped at the sound of Dash's voice, Twilight noticed how cool Dash's outfit was, mostly blue but still colorful. Twilight also noticed how smug she looked, but didn't seem to mind Asking if she was actually Rainbow Dash, Dash confirmed it. Twilight was uneasy, believing Dash disobeyed Celestia's orders, Twilight scolded Dash for disobeying the princess, though Dash was just confused. After being corrected by Dash, telling her she meant Principal Celestia instead of Princess Celestia, Twilight was embarrassed and stammered while Rainbow Dash eventually left her be.
Before long, Twilight was swarmed by a crowd of students and fell to her knees when she bumped into a student. Still not completely used to her body, Twilight was helped up by a kind student named Flash Sentry. Spike finally noticed that they probably weren't in a castle. Being the resourceful and intelligent person (pony?) she is, Twilight surveyed her environments and studied how other students and teachers were using their body parts. Noticing how students hold hands, how teachers wrote. Twilight was almost hit by Scootaloo and the other Cutie Mark Crusaders, seemingly noticing the resemblance they bore to her friends. Later, she went inside a bathroom and used the mirror to examine herself. Unfortunately for her, she realized all to lat it was a boys bathroom instead. Embarrassed, Twilight scooted out of the bathroom and back into the hallway.

In the hallways, Twilight saw Sunset Shimmer bullying a shy girl. Without knowing the true identity of the girl, both Twilight and Spike grew furious at the bullies mistreatment of the girl, with Spike even violently growing at her. Without hesitation, Twilight confronted the bully. The two got in a heated argument with physical teasing. Soon the bully walked away, but not before threatening other students in her wake. Although still angry at the bully, Twilight and the bond girl managed to bond rather quickly, with the girl becoming very attached to Spike very quickly. The shy girl, revealing herself as Fluttershy, told Twilight how she found a crown and gave it to Principal Celestia. Though Fluttershy was weirded out by Twilight's quirks such as referring to Celestia as the ruler, they become good friends quickly.
When Twilight found Celestia's office, she bowed to Celestia out of respect. Twilight found comfort in Celestia's office, as she always did. She always viewed Celestia as the perfect teacher and Twilight was eager to be her student once again. Twilight gently sat her bag down and tried to introduce herself, though Celestia didn't seem very interested in learning about her. Twilight cut to the chase and asked Celestia about the crown she had lost. In an apathetic tone, Celestia explained how she had Vice Principal Luna put away the crown for safe keeping, and asked Twilight if she wanted to run for the Fall Formal Princess this year. Celestia's tone shifted to one of warmth and energy as she described the Fall Formal to Twilight. Twilight instantly recognized the similarities between the Fall Formal and the Grand Galloping Gala, giggling at the idea of becoming a princess at the party Twilight excitably took the offer and decided to run for princess. Spike was confused by this and asked Twilight why she didn't just tell the truth. She explained to him how she believed Celestia wouldn't have believed her if even if she told the truth so she decided that she might as well run. She figured it couldn't have been to hard, yet she didn't know how to. After leaving, Twilight's weird way of walking confused a nerd.[34]

Twilight found herself in the cafeteria soon afterwards and ate a veggie burger with Fluttershy. Fluttrshy spilled some food on Twilight's shirt, but tried to clean it up. Soon later, Fluttershy gave Twilight a overview of the schools clique system. Twilight was confused by how divided the school was, but ultimately just decided to accept it. Sitting down to eat lunch, Twilight tried to eat an apple by picking it up with her mouth, much to the bewilderment of Fluttershy.
Now in the gym, Twilight and Spike appreciated the decorations around them. They soon met up with Pinkie Pie in a very typically Pinkie way. Twilight asked Pinkie if she was Pinkie, which lead Pinkie to think Twilight was a psychic. Twilight denied being a psychic, unless that's a thing in the world. After Twilight introduced herself as a new student and asked if she could sign up as a Fall Formal Princess candiate, Pinkie got serious and started to question her on whether or not she had a twin sister who lived in Canterlot, Twilight just replied with a 'maybe'. Pinkie gave Twilight the clipboard and pen in order to sign up with, though Twilight picked up the pen wit her mouth instead of her arms. Realizing her mistake, Twilight signed the clipboard with her hands, but had awful handwriting. Afterwards, a cowgirl named Applejack entered the gym carrying carts of fizzy apple cider with her brother, Big Mac. Almost instantly, Applejack was looking out for Twilight. When she heard Twilight was running for the Fall Formal Princess, she told her how bad of an idea it was and just how ruthless Sunset Shimmer can be. After a conversation, Applejack was confused as to how Twilight knew her name. Embarrassed she let that slip, Twilight left the gym.
Twilight was soon confronted by Sunset Shimmer in a dark hallway. Sunset belittled Twilight being a a pathetic replacement of her and threatened to take away Spike from her. Sunset eventually walked away, but not before issuing a threat about not fitting in. Largely unfazed by Sunsets taunting, Twilight went to get a snack from a vending machine. Twilight grew frustrated and even tried to buck the machine before she saw THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Trixie buy some peanut butter crackers from the machine. Frustrated and defeated about how out of place she felt, Twilight decided to do some formal research. Tracking down the schools library, Twilight began to use a computer for the first time in her life. Nearly breaking the poor thing, Twilight kept moving the desktop expecting things to work. An exasperated Cheerilee helped with it, sighing at how ignorant Twilight was. On the other side of the table, Twilight saw Scootaloo, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle listening to music they performed. They read the comments on their music, and were called a joke by an anonymous commenter, which they took as a compliment. Twilight tried to tell them otherwise but they ran off giddy. Twilight's stay in the library was disastrous. She didn't know how to type with her fingers and thus smashed the keyboard with her fist, she tried carrying dozens books at once, all of which collapsed on her, Cheerilee got onto her for being loud, she tried picking up a book with her mouth, she didn't know how to work a printing machine and was stung by its light and almost fell asleep at a table. Unbeknownst to her, Snips and Snails were filming her the entire time on their phones.
With the library closing in five short minutes, Twilight realized she never found a place to sleep. Spike being the ever loyal friend he was devised a plan beforehand. In the library, he made a bed of books complete with a blank for her to sleep on. Twilight affectionately petted Spike and showed him a year book she found. In the year book, they found a picture of Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, and Rarity all hanging out together as friends. Worried about what ruined their friendship, Twilight pondered what could've happened but Spike helped her normalize the situation. Together, under the glass roof depicting the night sky, Twilight and Spike huddled together and slept in the book bed.
Upon starting her morning, Twilight found herself to be the laughing stock of the school. Within moments, she was yanked into a room by Rarity. Rarity dressed Twilight up by giving her a blond wig. Twilight was ignorant to the whole thing, but as her new friends entered the room, they one-by-one explained what was going on. The footage Snips and Snails recorded the previous day was uploaded to the internet and edited to make Twilight look lie a buffoon. With a voice over by Sunset Shimmer, Twilight grew increasingly scared of what Sunset Shimmer was willing to do. With her friends beside her, Twilight dealt with the stressful time, but even that began to melt away when her friends started arguing. However, Twilight managed to get her friends to forgive one another and made them realize that the only reason they hated each other was because Sunset Shimmer lied and manipulated them to. Realizing the error of their ways, the friends went to try and reconcile their friendship with Rainbow Dash.
Now at the soccer field, Twilight watched as Rainbow Dash and Applejack became friends once again. Dash told Twilight that she would help her out if she could beat her in a game of soccer. The soccer game proved to be one sided as Dash beat her 5-0 but Dash saw the heart and determination within Twilight and decided to help her regardless. Dash and Twilight quickly bonded and with a hug, they officially became friends. At lunch time, Twilight and her friends visited the Sweet Shoppe to eat and regroup. After ordering oats in her smoothie, Twilight embarrassingly bumped into Flash Sentry, spilling her drink on his shirt, making her even more embarrassed. The two quietly bond as their hands touched when they both went to pick up the glass. Twilight blushed romantically but her friends tried to anchor back into reality. They told her that Flash Sentry was Sunset Shimmer's ex-boyfriend, and that Sunset Shimmer would probably do something terrible to her if she tried dating him. The friends thought of a way to help Twilight win the Fall Formal Princess, as Rarity came up with a brilliant idea. Twilight watched on as she bellowed a loud cry, gaining the attention of everyone in the shoppe. Rarity introduced the girls to her Wondercolts horse ears and gave an inspirational speech about how Twilight united them all.
Back in school again, the friends entered the cafeteria during lunch time. As Spike cued the music, Twilight's friends began to sing a ballad about how Twilight should win. Flash Sentry, though not informed, helped out by giving the song a powerful guitar solo. The entire cafeteria started to dance along, even Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon started to shake their hips to the groove. Why, even Snips and Snails started to dance along until they realized Sunset Shimmer was watching. Sunset Shimmer came up with a great plot, she ordered Snips and Snails to ruin the gym and pin the blame on Twilight by editing photos Snips and Snails took of her. Twilight was called into Vice Principal Luna's office, where the authority figure told Twilight she was no longer allowed to run due to her vandalism. However, Flash Sentry saved the day by showing Luna that the photos were doctored. Luna pardoned Twilight, letting her still attend, but had to postpone the Fall Formal. Twilight hugged Flash. He asked her if she wanted to go to the Fall Formal with him and she buried her head in his chest. Realizing time was of the essence, Twilight had to bail on Flash and meet up with her friends. Flash was heartbroken, but let her be.
Twilight ran all the way to Carousel Boutique and locked herself in the changing room with Spike as she started to cry. Twilight didn't know what to do, but Spike told her to tell her friends the whole truth. Twilight was worried what would happen if they didn't believe her, but Spike convinced her that her friends rallied for and loved her for her heart, not who she was out in the outside. Confident, Twilight greeted her friends and told her that the formal wasn't happening tonight. Twilight then tried to explain her origin, but Pinkie Pie blurted everything out in rapid fire. Her friends were understandably skeptical but Twilight confirmed everything. Her friends were taken aback from the realization, but accepted her nonetheless and decided to help her get the formal going on the current night. Returning to the gym, the friends all rallied together to clean up the gym. Although the work was plentiful, other students decided to lend a helping hand. Twilight started cleaning up the stage while Flash Sentry's band started to reverse and the two cutely blushed at one another.
The girls were still on the stage as all the students began to chat in the gym. Satisfied and proud of her work, Twilight watched on content as all the students chanted that they were gonna vote for her. Back at Carousel Boutique, the girls started to get ready for the big formal. Twilight combed Rainbow Dash's hair and after witnessing her friends dress in gorgeous outfits, Twilight to dressed in hers, a pink an white long skirt with a floofy bottom. Rarity offered to give Applejack a make over, though Applejack was hesitant, Twilight cheered her on.[35] The friends all took Rarity's limbo to the school. There, Twilight was greeted by Flash who humbly asked if Twilight wanted to dance with him. Twilight explained the misunderstanding and the two entered the gym together as a couple. Twilight started dancing with her friends. The Canterlot Movie Club were getting their pictures taken, but had "no style". Twilight and her friends stepped in after them and got their pictures taken by Photo Finish. Photo claimed that while they had the fashion, they had no style. Dawning heart-shaped sunglasses, Twilight got the 'style' Photo desired. For the next few minutes, Twilight and her friends had a crazy photo-shoot with Twilight dressing up like a criminal with a mustache while Pinkie dressed up like a detective.[36]
The time finally came and Celestia read aloud who became the Fall Formal Princess. In a brief second that felt like an eternity, Twilight was crowned the princess. On the stage, she dawned the crown in front of all of the students, but before she could celebrate, she saw Snips and Snails kidnap Spike. Without hesitation, Twilight chased after the two delinquents into the parking lot. In the parking lot, she spotted Sunset Shimmer holding a hammer ready to smash the portal to Equestria. Sunset forced he goons to let go of Spike and gave Twilight an ultimatum, either she keeps the crown or the portal is destroyed. Twilight valiantly decides to keep the crown, claiming that the world needs its power to repel evil like Sunset. Enraged, Sunset attacked Twilight and forced her to the ground. An all out brawl of chaos starts as everyone tried to get the crown. Eventually, Sunset managed to get her hands on the crown and used its power to turn into a monstrous demon. She also turned Snips and Snails into her own demon sidekicks and used her power to brainwash the students to be under her control. Twilight spotted Flash Sentry With her new power, further fueling her anger towards Sunset. Sunset tried to destroy Twilight but her friends banded together to protect her. The gang was shielded by a mysterious forcefield and with the power of friendship, they all transformed into new forms. Twilight gained pony-like ears and pegasus like wings as she flew up and attacked Sunset with all of her power.
Twilight fell to the ground, unconscious, but awoke after being licked by Spike. Twilight and Spike shared one last loving hug before Twilight walked over to the crate to spot a singed Sunset Shimmer. Crying, Sunset laid defeated but was forgiven by Twilight and her friends. Twilight told Sunset that her friends would be there for her and help her through the hard times. After the chaos, Twilight was once again crowned the Fall Formal Princess. In light of all that happened, Flash asked Twilight for one more dance, to which she agreed too. Back in the gym, the crazy kids were partying as they danced crazily. Twilight watched as Applejack and Apple Bloom started to dance together to their song, and watched the ensuing dance battle between Applejack and Apple Bloom vs Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo. When Apple Bloom and Scootaloo teamed up to serve Applejack and Rainbow Dash together, Twilight was confused when Pinkie Pie gave them a trophy.[37] With one last picture together, Twilight gave a farewell to her dear friends as she traveled back into Equestria where she belonged. Pinkie tried to follow, but was was to late.

The Storm war
While the preparations of the Festival of Friendship, her festival, she is of course stressed. She is soon greeted by Spike who faithfully brought her the charts and graphs she needed. Despite this, Twilight is still nervous over meeting her mentors. Spike tries to cheer her up by reminding her of her plan. Twilight agrees and the two friends go to meet up with the three princesses, Luna, Celestia and Cadance. Now in the presence of her mentors, the group go over how excited they are about the festival, but they all admit that Songbird Serenade will probably be the "mane" event.[note 3] With the formalities out of the way, Twilight decides to go over her plan. Needless to say, the plan doesn't go over to well. The extremely complicated math and extremely specific calculations prove to be to much for the other princesses, but they assure Twilight that she can make make the festival work on her own without their magical assistance. Disappointed, Twilight leaves the castle and enters the crowd of her subjects. She's quickly greeted by her friends, who are of course supportive of her, but accidentally cause her even more stress, such as when Pinkie Pie tells her that she cannot, under any circumstance, fail and that the festival will define who she is. Forever. When Pinkie realizes how nervous Twilight she is, she pulls her and the rest of her friends in a group hug.[38]
Somehow, the entire town breaks out into song as they try to cheer up Twilight Sparkle. Her friends chime about how Twilight "got" it, and how they "got it" together. With Angel and a pretty green bird, Fluttershy attempts to cheer up Twilight, remarking how they can do it together. The Apple Family quickly chimes in as well, letting Twilight know how much they care about her. Rarity is next in line, telling her to pay attention to the details while Twilight remarks that generosity is what they're all about. Her friends then go to great lengths to show her that everything will be in perfect harmony. The weather, the banquet, the music and even the ponies are all in perfect harmony, united by friendship and love. Lost in the fun, Pinkie fires a massive cannon filled with a cake that hits Twilight, covering her in its contents. Still covered in frosting and cream, Twilight greets Songbird Serenade, who had just arrived at Canterlot. Twilight shows Songbird around where her sound stage is located. Before she goes, Songbird notices Twilights sticky situation and the two joke about it, Songbird saying how she's "caked in cake".[38]
Just moments after meeting Songbird Serenade, Twilight begins to notice storm clouds off in the distance. Pinkie chimes in that they might be the clowns, but everyone else is understandably having their doubts. Rainbow Dash ominously claims that she doesn't think they're clouds as a massive, eerie ship becomes visible out in the horizon. Shortly after, Twilight witness Tempest Shadow giving a speech about they're going to take over the land. While the Princesses protest, Tempest throws bombs at the crowd. Cadance manages to form a shield in order to protect them from the bombs, but it doesn't last long and soon Cadance becomes crystallized. Horrified, Twilight doesn't know what to do. She hears Celestia ordering Luna to go to the Badlands in order to get the aid of "Queen of the Hippo" but she to is crystallized. Luna tries to flee, but is hit by the bombs as well. Twilight tries to fight back, she fires a beam of magic at the Storm Guards, but the beam bounces off of its shied and strikes the bridge underneath instead, blowing it up. The group of friends end up in an underneath river. As the group are being carried away by the current, Grubber remarks how the commander isn't going to like this predicament.[38]
Twilight is devastated by what just transpired. While her friends talk about fighting back and what they're going to do when they see the commander once again, Twilight solemnly stares at the river, thinking about what just happened. Twilight finally speaks up, mentioning how they have to find "The Queen", the "Queen of the Hippos" she later elaborates. She sternly mentions how she's going to have to leave Equestria in order to save the Princesses. While her friends are confused by the prospect of having to get the help of the Hippo Queen and scared over leaving Equestria, Twilight assures them that they don't have to tag along, but she needs to to do so to save Equestria. Her friends, of course, insist on joining Twilight regardless. The group of friends set off on their journey and end up in a vast, ever-stretching and seemingly endless desert in the Badlands. Exhausted, thirsty and hungry, the ponies trudge through the desert without much aim or focus. Pinkie Pie claims she spots something up in the horizon, but Spike refuses to believe her. However, it seems like Pinkie is onto something as Twilight spots a road, and at the end of the road, an entire city in the distance. With newly found energy, the ponies make haste and march into the city.[38]
Now in Kluge Town, the friends are completely out of place, not only being the only ponies, but being the only quadrupedal species in the immediate areas. Pinkie tries to get the help of the locals, despite Twilight's wishes, and ends up making a scene. Several of the locals begin to make disturbing comments, such as planning on shearing the fur of the ponies, while another one says they 'want' the blue pony. While the locals surround the group of friends, with Spike trying (and failing) stepping up for his pony friends, a cat steps in to defend them. The cat claims the ponies are infected with "Pastelus Coloritis" to give them their colorful colors, offending Applejack in the process. The plan works and the crowd disperses in fears they may catch the dreadful disease. The cat introduces himself as Capper, Rainbow Dash and Rarity instantly praise and swoon over the smooth talking cat, but Twilight wonders if they can truly trust him. Pinkie chimes in that they need a friend in such an alien location, to which Capper latches on to. He goes onto sing about how Kluge Town for "little fillies" to be all alone in. Capper guides the ponies to an ally way and a mine-shaft as he shows them where he lives, a surprisingly large and spacious house, filled with valuable "breakables", paintings and books.[38]
While exploring the house, Twilight spots a book with a map on it. Although initially just trying to use the ponies, Capper begins to warm up to them due to their kindness towards him. Meanwhile, Twilight and her friends begin to plot their adventure with the maps Twilight discovered only moments prior as they realize they're supposed to be searching for the queen of the Hippogriffs, not the queen of Hippos. Scowling to show her distrust, Twilight informs Capper that the Hippogriffs are located on the top of Mt. Aris. Pinkie Pie quickly figures out what mountain they're referring too as Capper tries to save himself. Seeing through his facade, Twilight orders her friends to leave only to be confronted by a naked-mole rat named Verko. The mole-rat lets it slide that he intends to "buy" the ponies from Capper much to the disgust, anger and sadness of the friends. Only seconds later, Tempest and her goods break in and confront the friends. Tempest easily dispatches with Verko, during the chaos, Twilight and her friends escape from Tempest and her goons. The ponies find themselves on a wooden windmill outside while still being chased by the Storm Guards. As they get on one o the blades of the windmill, they're met with opposition from the guards, but the ponies are able to out muscle them, but in the process, they unhinge the blade from the windmill, sending it flying throughout Kluge Town. Panicking, the group of friends make a jump for it.[38]
Twilight and her friends find themselves stuck in a cargo room, filled with various crates and boxes. They see a group of Birds off in the distance. The birds start to hear the ponies, but believe them just to be rats, much to the ire of Rainbow Dash. Applejack asks Twilight if they should just ask the workers to help them, while Twilight retorts with the fact that the last time they trusted someone, they were going to be sold off. Much to their fear, the cargo workers notice the "livestock" on their boat, leaving their boss no other option then to throw them overboard. However, before they can go about it, their lunch time begins. The ponies are understandably confused as to why they were going to kill them, only to invite them to lunch. As it turns out, the Storm King only allows them one meal a day, so they take every chance they can get at enjoying food. After realizing they're delivery workers, Twilight asks them if they can deliver her and her friends to Mt. Aris. After it's revealed that the delivery workers used to be "Swashbuckling Treasure Hunters", or just pirates, Rainbow Dash begins to engage in song while Twilight wonders if it's necessary to sing about it. The ponies quickly befriend the pirates and the two groups quickly become close allies. To celebrate the occasion, Rainbow Dash performs a Sonic Rainboom, much to Twilights horror. While the others bast in the glow of the rainboom, Twilight realizes that it would grab the attention of Tempest and the Storm Empire. Twilight is unfortunately correct in her assumption. Twilight, Captain Celaeno and the others spot a Storm Empire airship approaching them very quickly.[38]
The Captain orders the ponies to find refuge in the cellar of the ship while the pirates attempt to fend off the Storm Empire. Rainbow Dash questions if they saw her rainboom, while Twilight snaps at informs her that yes, they did and the situation is very, very bad because of it. As the battle rages on, the ponies are thrown across the cellar. Twilight comes up with a plan to get off before the pirates inform Tempest where they are, but Dash assures her the pirates have their back. Regardless, Twilight devises a plan to get them to safety. Twilights plan is set in motion, her friends fall from a trap door and they all appear to be falling to their doom. However, Twilight came prepared and scoops her friends up in a falling crate. Using magic, she wraps the crate with ropes and creates a makeshift sail, then causes Spike to breath fire towards the bottom of the sail. Twilight effectively turns the crate into a hot-air balloon. For all intents and purposes, the group of friends have a safe trip to Mount Aris.[38]
Sometime later, the ponies begin to scale Mount Aris. Though the journey is tough, Twilight manages to power through it. Eventually, they make it to the summit, only to realize the entire kingdom is desolate and lifeless. Applejack calls out for signs of life while Twilight is thoroughly confused. Soon, the ponies hear a song coming from somewhere over yonder. As they go to investigate the song, they come across a pond. Pinkie cannonballs into the pond, much to Twilights annoyance. Now in the pond as well, Twilight swims over to Pinkie Pie only to get sucked into the river by a rampaging whirlpool. Drowning, Twilight and her friends are eventually saved by an unknown being by giving them air and oxygen. The being reveals itself to be a young female...thing and she takes them to see her mother. At the aquatic court of the undersea kingdom, Twilight basks in the majesty of it all. However, as the queen notices Twilight and her friends, she immediately orders her guards to dispose of them, bellowing that surface dwellers are not welcomed.[38]
Princess Skystar defends them however, which makes her come around, if only a little bit. The queen tells Twilight and the others the story of how the Storm King destroyed her city, causing the Hippogriffs to flee underwater. Afterwards, the queen cast a spell on the surface dwellers, turning them all into aquatic animals. Admiring her new body, Twilight claims with this power, she could transform every Equestrian into something powerful enough to fend off the Storm King. However, Queen Novo does not allow her to use such a force, as her responsibility is her subjects and her subjects only. Twilight is understandably disappointed by this turnabout and mourns her lost. When Pinkie wants to spend time with Skystar, Applejack interjects that they don't have the time, but Twilight disagrees and encourages her friends show Skystar a great time. As her friends are bonding with Skystar, Twilight attempts to steal The Pearl from the Hippogriffs. Unfortunately for her, she sets off the alarm, causing the Queen to become aware of her presence. Furious with anger, Queen Novo scowls at Twilight and scolds her daughter that strangers don't belong in her home. Turning towards Twilight, she says that Twilight doesn't deserve to be one of hem and banishes them away to the surface.[38]

Narrowly avoiding drowning, Twilight and her friends solemnly make their way towards a nearby coastline, walking with shame and regret. Pinkie Pie is furious at Twilight and berates her for stealing the pearl. Twilight tries to defend herself by claiming it was to save Equestria and it was their only option, but Pinkie shoots back by saying that Queen Novo would've given them the pearl regardless. It's at this moment that Pinkie Pie realizes that Twilight didn't just want them to show Skystar a good time and thus had an ulterior motive. The two friends argue it out, out of anger, Twilight threatens Pinkie Pie with her magic, causing the pink mare to shudder back. Twilight ries to apologize o her dear friend, but Pinkie Pie doesn't even want to talk to Twilight anymore. After the incident, Twilight's friends leave her, all except Spike who sticks by her side. Twilight can no longer contain her emotions, and weeps alone. Spike tries to cheer Twilight up, but it doesn't work, Twilight wallows in her self-pity, claiming she ruined everything. In the midst of her sorrow, Twilight notices that she doesn't hear Spike, only to discover that her baby dragon is being held by a Storm Guard against his will. Before she can save her best friend, Twilight is trapped in a cage and whisked away into an airship. Freeing himself from the guard, Spike runs off to get help as he sees his best friend get kidnapped.[38]

Twilight finds herself in a grim situation, trapped in a cage in an oppressively dark room. She tries to free herself, but nothing comes from it. Afterwards, Twilight is greeted by Tempest Shadow. Twilight tries to reason with the dark mare, but Tempest is isn't budging. Instead, Tempest sings to Twilight why she became the way she is. After realizing how lonely Tempest was, Twilight sympathizes with her kidnapper. Tempest claims that friendship has failed her, and has failed Twilight too, but Twilight realizes that friendship didn't fail her, she failed friendship.[38]

Still caged, Twilight is brought to Canterlot on a wheeled truck. The princess watches in horror after she sees what has happened to her hometown. Twilight pleads to Tempest, but the mare isn't having any of it. The two are quickly interrupted by the Storm King himself. Now in the presence of the four alicorns, the Storm King begins to activate the true power of his mystical staff. Twilight fights her power being drained, but it's no use. Tossed aside as if she was like garbage, Twilight lays defeated. Moments later, a large battle ca be seen from the balcony Twilight laid upon, she noticed her friends were fighting off the Storm Guards, and winning! Disgusted by the "cute pony thing", the Storm King decides to end their little battle by creating a city-ending storm with his staff. In his demonstration of power, the Storm King attacks Tempest without a care, leaving her to die by knocking her off a cliff. However, Twilight saves the mares life. The Storm King points his staff at the two injured ponies, ready to end their lives when Pinkie Pie and the rest of Twilight's friends tackle the mad king out of nowhere.[38]
Twilight is overjoyed by her friends heroic acts and quickly reconciles with Pinkie Pie. Their celebration is short lived however, as while they make up, the castle begins to fall apart with the Staff of Storms still in empowered. The friends make a daring effort to retrieve the staff and race against the Storm King. However, although Twilight reaches the staff before the Storm King, the two are sucked into the rampaging storm in the sky. Twilight's friends mourn for their presumed lost friend, but Twilight survives the endeavor in one piece. The friends embrace one another, only to be interrupted by the Storm King, who also survived the storm. The king hurls a bomb at the friends. Tempest makes haste and rushes to protect her newly gained friends. The mare saves her friends, while also forcing the king to get hit by the bomb as well, causing the two to become stone. The Storm King falls to the ground, shattering on impact while Twilight uses the power of the staff to heal Tempest. Now with a new friend for life, Tempest and Twilight decide to set things right and go off to heal the rest of the princesses with the staff. As they do so, Luna, Cadance and Celestia herself embrace Twilight and Canterlot goes back to being normal.[38]
Twilight finally gets to attend the Festival of Friendship as Songbird Serenade sings a song in her honor. In the crowd of love and friendship, Twilight spots Tempest all alone. Tempest, though reformed, is still rather grim and solemn, especially regarding her broken horn, but Twilight reassures her that theirs nothing wrong with it. The two friends chat, leading to Tempest to show off her abilities as a unicorn. With a single shot of her magic, Tempest creates a breathtaking array of fireworks, and thus the night ends.[38]

After being challenged to one last round of Sibling Supreme by Shining Armor in order to test out the new defenses he and others built for Canterlot Castle, Twilight constructed a detailed plan to sneak into the castle to receive the Sibling Supreme Crown. However, as she did so, Shining Armor sent her a letter letting her know he knew exactly what she was going to do. Twilight instead let her friends come up with plans instead, though one-by-one they miserably failed. In the end, Spike and Luna won the sibling supreme, causing Twilight and Shining armor to finally realize Spike was their sibling all along.[41]
After Derpy delivered a package from Canterlot to Twilight, she nostalgically reminisced over the items it contained. However, when she came across a copy of Perfection: The Impossible Pursuit, a book she borrowed from the Canterlot Library before she moved to Ponyville, she was rocked with guilt. After attempting to check the book in at the library, she realized that the kindly old librarian, Dusty Pages, no longer worked there. Believing she caused Dusty to get fired, Twilight ran to her house to try to make things right, only to realize she moved away. After traveling across Equestria, she eventually located her at Silver Stable Community, a retirement home where she found Dusty was living an exciting life in her golden years as a musician and athlete.
Dusty initially rejected Twilight when she tried to get her to return to the library, but warmed up to her in their second encounter when Dusty explained to her how much happier she was away from the library and imparted a nugget to Twilight regarding how living up to impossible standards only brings misery. Back at the library, Twilight returned the book with relative grace.[6]

Later, Twilight allowed Smolder to leave school to go back to her homeland in the Dragon Lands to meet with her brother with the supervision of Spike and Fluttershy.[43]
Twilight supported Scootaloo and helped her stay in Ponyville when her parents wanted her to leave by appearing a celebration in her honor.[44]

Later life
Much of Twilight's life after her second and final coronation was unclear, but she ruled Equestria as a graceful, majestic and kind ruler. Much like Celestia did prior, Twilight took up charge as the headmare of Princess Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns and took a student under her wing named Luster Dawn, who may have been the daughter of Starlight Glimmer and Sunburst.
Twilight kept in contact with her five friends from Ponyville, and presumably the other friends she made along the way, and founded the Friendship Council, an organization made up of her, Spike, the others and possibly Discord as they caught up on each others lives, discussed matters of Equestria and ruled the land together.
Using her continued friendship with the others as an example, Twilight taught Luster Dawn that friendship isn't something that fades, but stays forever if true and genuine.[55]
Personality
Twilight is pure of heart - she's as good natured as it gets, kind, gentle, caring, heroic and incredibly selfless. Righteous and brave, Twilight has proven herself to be among the greatest heroes to ever grace Equestria. Aside from her courageous, lion-hearted nature, Twilight's two most recognizable traits is her sheer intelligence and her easily stressed nature. Her intelligence and generally nerdy and dorky personality has caused her to study many different disciplines, such as engineering, astronomy and magic.

Parents
Twilight Velvet and Night Light are Twilight's mother and father respectively. Not to much is known about their relationship but they seemed to be very loving, supportive and caring parents who supported their children every step of the way. They organized the "Sibling Supreme" competition between their children to encourage them to improve themselves as well as do household chores.
Shining Armor
Shining Armor was Twilight's older brother, or Best Big Brother Forever. Twilight loved her older brother and likewise her brother considered her his favorite lady in the whole wide world, tied with his own wife. Despite their closeness, as they both live busy lives at different places in Equestria, they don't spend as much time together as they wished they could.
Abilities
Intellect and skills
Twilight had many skills across the board, but her most apparent trait was her intellect. Twilight had a mastery over a wide spread of academic concepts, from history, to engineering to various forms of sciences. In particular, Twilight had an affinity towards astronomy and loved to stargaze. Next to her intellectual abilities, Twilight was an incredibly talented musician, primarily a singer and worked as the lead singer for The Rainbooms. Twilight didn't display much talent with other musical instruments, but was a talented pianists.
As a byproduct of her intellect, Twilight was a natural born leader. Not only was she courageous and compassionate, but also was able to make tough decisions, organize creatures and know what was best for others.
Although Twilight's athletic abilities were often mocked by her friends, Twilight did display a number of abilities in this regard. Firstly, her flying skills, though not nearly as good as Dash's, was shown to be quite good by the time she got the hang of them, and was shown to be able to fly across Equestria in, at most, hours, going from Canterlot to Silver Shores in no time. However, her showings in other fields were lackluster. Her soccer game against Rainbow Dash was incredibly one-sided and she was among the last ponies to finish the Running of the Leaves, but she has shown great stamina and an unwillingness to give up during her attempts at these endeavors.
Magic and powers
Twilight was considered the greatest unicorn in Ponyville in terms of magical powers and was able to lift even an Ursa Minor with her abilities. Twilight's most often used ability was probably her teleportation spell, which allowed her and others to teleport a great distance, though the extent of said distance was never revealed. Aside from teleportation, Twilight tended to use forcefields to both protect and trap herself, her friends and her enemies. Although a pacifist by nature, Twilight still used offensive magic when necessary, such as when she used magical blasts to combat Tirek and other fiends.
Twilight in addition had spells that allowed her to enter books, create sound-proof silence, transmute living beings into objects and grow hair.
Behind the scenes
Portrayal
Due to being the lead character in both Friendship is Magic and the first two Equestria Girls films, Twilight has appeared in several pieces of media and thus, has had a number of actresses to portray her. In all English-animated media, Twilight was voiced by Tara Strong, though was portrayed by Kira Buckland in My Little Pony: Power Ponies. In the Japanese-original series, Little Pony TV Twilight was portrayed by Miyuki Sawashiro, a Japanese singer and member of Milky Holmes.
Twilight Sparkle has had a few forays into the realm of live-action, unfortunately many of her actresses in these roles are currently unidentified. These include an unidentified actress in the Taiwanese opening and an actress who portrayed her in the music video Magic of Friendship. At least one of her actresses has been identified however, which is Chloe MacGregor, who portrayed her in My Little Pony Musical, a theatrical adaptation of Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks.
In-universe, Twilight Sparkle has been played by a few actresses, mostly as meta-jokes involving the release of My Little Pony: The Movie. In Friendship is Magic #66, an unnamed actress portrayed her in various films and in the covers to My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel, Twilight was depicted as being a movie star, appearing at a theater in Applewood for her own film.
Age
Like with every character in the show, their is confusion regarding the actual age of Twilight, which fans generally assuming late teens to mid 20s as the general range. Using secondary canon sources such as the IDW Publishing comic books, a decent amount of chronology involving Twilight's age can be gleamed. Most notably, promotional material for My Little Pony: 20/20 described the story taking place twenty-years in the past, which took place during the Sonic Rainboom period, meaning the Sonic Rainboom that connected the Mane Six happened twenty years prior to the events of the comic, which were set sometime after My Little Pony: The Movie. Some fans however do not take this as canon as the actual contents of the book give vague descriptions of the chronology.
Twilight is around the same age as Lyra, as the two went to school together in the same classes, and Lyra has been shown to be old enough to join S.M.I.L.E.[56] and get married, implying they're all adults.
Marketability
Twilight often contends with Pinkie Pie as being the face of the My Little Pony brand. Twilight has appeared on countless trading cards and has hundreds of unique toys modeled in her likeness and was among the first three toys in the Bishoujo toyline. As of 2020, Twilight remains much of the face as she appears front and center in the packaging for Reveal the Magic toys.
Twilight Twinkle
As depicted in the bible, My Little Pony Adventures, Twilight was previously named "Twilight Twinkle". While her characterization was mostly the same, being described as clever, intelligent, somewhat insensitive and rude but kind-hearted, morally sound, brave with a strong sense of right and wrong, as well as both a natural leader and insecure, her history was slightly different. Being the Unicorn of Ponyville, a concept dropped in the final show, Twilight Twinkle was a courtly individual who would receive missions from Queen Celestia, an inverse of the concept in the show.
Twilight Twinkle was to have strong relationships with Cheerilee and Shaman (who later turned into Zeocra). With Cheerilee, Twilght and her were to have a very close relationship, being both studious ponies with passions for lore and histories. This relationship was almost dropped entirely from the show, but the two nonetheless appear to be good friends. With Shaman, Twilight was to have a mentor-student relationship with her with Shaman being her mentor. This relationship was brought up to an extent in "Magic Duel" where Zecora mentored Twilight to defeat Trixie.
Though unclear, Twilight had some relationship to the city of "Canterbury".
Twilight presumably was set to appear in two unproduced episodes. "Fancy Meeting You Deer" and "Nothing More to Sea". In the former, she was to convince an adoptive pony boy who was adopted by Deer who were described like stereotypical North-Eastern Native Americans (presumably inspired by the Iroquois or Algonquian peoples) to come back to Fillydelphia and in the latter, she was to travel a city at the beach only to discover it was dry and quickly becoming a ghost town. Eventually, she was to confront the Kraken in the Sea Pony Kingdom.
In spin-offs
Twilight was the main character of the first Equestria Girls film, My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and a major character in its sequel, Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks. In the Japanese exclusive TV show, Little Pony TV, Twilight was one of the two main characters, the other being her co-host Mimorin as they discussed aspects of Equestria and taught the audience at home English.
Appearances in other Hasbro media
Twilight appeared as a minor throughout other pieces of Hasbro media. She was a major character in the comic "When Worlds Collide", where she helped Optimus Prime and the Autobots fight off Megatron and was set to appear in the canceled Transformers x My Little Pony. Twilight appeared in pieces of artwork throughout Synergy: A Hasbro Creators Showcase and was shown to interact with members of The Holograms. Additionally, merchandise depicting Twilight as Dungeons & Dragons has been released.
In other media
IDW comics
Twilight Sparkle is a central character in many of the IDW storylines and one-shots. Her backstory was greatly expanded upon in the comics and Friendship is Magic #40 showcased her earliest days raising Spike, how she went from hating the dragon to loving him as family. The comics also implied that Twilight may be a more than just a pony, with iconography of her cutie mark being associated with ancient heroes such as Baast.
Twilight's characterization in the comics vary greatly from writer to writer. Earlier arcs tended to play up her sweet, kind but slightly mischievous side, while later arcs and one-shots played with her more zany and sometimes rude personality. Though still a generally heroic figure, Twilight has many downright villainous moments in the comics.
Manga
Pucchihumi manga
Twilight was a main character in the Pucchigumi manga and appeared in most of its stories. The only notable addition to her character in the manga, aside from her egocentric personality, is her romantic side that culminates after she witnessed her Canterlot Wedding.
Seven Seas manga
Twilight was the primarily character of the first chapter of the manga and made appearances throughout. Her characterization is more of her studious, anxious and stressed out self, with signs of her compassionate and kind nature throughout, such as when she cried when she thought she lost Pinkie Pie forever. Also, she turned into a Magical Girl named Twilight-san.

Opening arc
After Nightmare Moon came returned, she destroyed Ponyville and so Twilight Sparkle and the player unite to attempt to rebuild the city and bring back harmony to Equestria. In doing this, they buy a Windmill and later welcomed Bon Bon to the town. As they progressed, Twilight was grateful she could take her mind off Nightmare Moon, at least for the time being. [57] Later, Twilight attempted to let Pinkie Pie know it was safe to return and so she threw a party with a Balloon Stand.[58]
Later, Twilight read Elements of Harmony: A Reference Guide and forgot to eat. Due to this, she got the player to pick some apples so they could feed themselves.[59]

Twilight is a figure in a few RPG stories, such as Tails of Equestria: Curse of the Statuettes and Tails of Equestria: A Dragon's Bounty. In the former, she was turned into stone by Moonbeam - who the story tells is basically a stand in for Twilight - and in the later, she visited Vanhoover to stop Razer from destroying the city. She, of course, didn't do squat and instead three foals, Strong Oak, Thrilly Filly and Firebrand instead saved the day.
