"Another reason I like rocks – they don't exclude you if you're... different than other ponies" — Maud Pie[source]
Maud Pie was taciturn elder sister of the Pie sisters. Serious, to-the-point, yet emotional, caring and kind, Maud had a more academic disposition than her sisters, taking an acute interest in geology as a scholarly study rather than a earthly one, and graduating with a degree in 'rockology'. Fittingly, the stoney-pony had a pet rock by the name of Boulder, whom she cherished dearly.
Known for her immense strength and muted nature, Maud was shown to difficult for many to get along with at first, but an indispensable friend once the barrier was overcome. A romantic, Maud developed a relationship with Mudbriar, a pony who shared many of her quirks and traits, and together the two formed a loving relationship.
Maud has both a trained body and trained mind. She is very strong physically, but also highly intelligent.

Portrayal
Maud Pie was portrayed by Ingrid Nilson in all of her voiced appearances. Nilson was frequently praised by fans for her mute, monotone, yet emotive performance.
Maud Pie is an average built pony, with a mostly original animation model, though it takes some animation cues from Crystal Pony mares, such as having similar eyelashes. Her cutie mark is scarcely scene, but depicts a rock not dissimilar to Tom in the few shots it can be made out. One of the meanings of Maud's name refers to a gray striped plaid coat, which may be in reference to her drab color scheme.
Maud Pie's full name is Maudileena Daisy Pie, which is mentioned in the episode "Rock Solid Friendship", continuing the trend of the Pie sisters having long names. Her name has similarly been spelled as Maude or Mod. Some toy releases reveal her name as Maud Rock Pie.
Maud's name has a triple meaning. As a noun, it refers to a gray striped plaid coat, referring to her dull color scheme, and as a name, it means "powerful battler", referring to her immense physical strength. It is also similar to the food-item, mud pie.
Under normal lightning conditions, Maud Pie's color scheme roughly:
French Gray complexion (#B8B8BE) with a Manatee Gray outline (#8A8B93)
Lavender Purple mane/tail (#9882BA) with a Mulled Wine outline (#503E67)
Eye gradient that features Jungle Green (#29A07E) , Jagged Ice (#B2E2E0) and Ice Cold (#A6F3DE)
Maud Pie and her pet Boulder have a rocky start when they first come to Ponyville (rock poetry is not for everypony), but her love for her younger sister Pinkie Pie shows the others she's one rock-solid pony!
Maud was one of the characters featured in Hasbro's series of official avatars. (pictured)
Maud's relationship with Boulder is a reference to the Pet Rock craze of the 1970s. The creator of the Pet Rock brand, Gary Dahl would die on March23, 2015, almost exactly a year after Maud Pie's debut.
Maud's existence was retroactively added during her debut in season 4, as she appeared during an event in Pinkie Pie's life previously depicted, the Sonic Rainboom which did not feature her initially.
Ingrid Nilson, Maud's voice actor, also portrayed her sisters, Limestone and Marble Pie. In the Equestria Girls continuity, she also voiced Kimberlite, a fangirl of Maud.
Maud is arguably Nilson's second major role in her career, the first being Raspberry Tart in the The Strawberry Shortcake films and television series.
