Silver Spoon is a silver-coated Earth Pony who lives in Ponyville, Central Equestria. She's best friends with Diamond Tiara, who she has a sisterly love for, and has since become good friends with Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle and even Snips and Snails. Like Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon has a conflicted and complicated personality, feeling like she was forced to use a persona of a mean-spirited bully in order to impress her family. Nonetheless, her kinder side came through on a few occasions of her adventures throughout Ponyville.

History

Era of Harmony

Silver Spoon taunting Apple Bloom

Being the daughter of the second riches family in Ponyville, Silver Spoon felt she had to hold herself to a higher standard than her peers. Mostly, the "blank flanks". As such, she was very stuck up and rude to others, even her superiors. When Cheerilee showed off pictures of her youth, Silver Spoon laughed at them, mocking her. Along with Diamond Tiara, she passed a blank note to Apple Bloom in order to make fun of her lack of a cutie mark. Silver Spoon gleefully reveled in the misery and embarrassment such a stunt put on Apple Bloom. After class, Apple Bloom was walking with Twist, but Silver Spoon interrupted their time together to rub in their lack of cutie marks one last time.

Later, Silver Spoon attended Diamond Tiara's cute-ceañera. Her pompous attitude was still in full force. When she and Tiara spot Apple Bloom at the party, they were initially taken aback by Apple Bloom's supposed cutie mark, but when it was revealed that it was a lie, they verbally tore into her taunting her as hard as ever. During their taunting, the fillies Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle came to Apple Bloom's defense. Confused by how happy the fillies are without cutie marks, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon made there way up stairs and looked down on the party. While Tiara was angry and spiteful, Silver Spoon seemed sad, as if she was jealous of their friendship.[1]

Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara attended the talent show at Ponyville Schoolhouse, though their act was unknown.[2]

While on a fieldtrip to the Hedge maze, Silver Spoon seemed to be impressed by the statues of the past heroes of Equestria. When the Crusaders got into a fight over what the statue of Discord symbolized, Silver Spoon watched in annoyance, but later laughed at what fools they made for themselves.[3]

When Apple Bloom came down with a bad case of the Cutie pox, Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara noticed how lame her talent of hoola-hooping was. Of course, the two fillies ridiculed but even they were taken aback by the amount of skill Apple Bloom seemed not have. Once Apple Bloom got a second cutie mark, Silver Spoon ad Diamond Tiara grew increasingly angry and jealous of her success.[4]

Embarrassed by the dated traditions of her family, Apple Bloom was dressed in a traditional Apple bonnet when she spotted Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara. She tried to hide but it didn't work out and soon even Silver Spoon was at a lost of words. Later, at school, Silver Spoon was put asleep by Filthy Rich's presentation. She started to laugh at Granny Smith, but by the time Granny finished her presentation o the history of Ponyville, Silver Spoon was fully entranced and was even the first to clap.[5]

During Hearts and Hooves day, Silver Spoon exchanged cards with Diamond Tiara and looked happily as Princess Erroria gave a card to Diamond Tiara]].[6]

Silver Spoon was seen leaving the classroom with a happy expression.[7]

Three bullies, one clubhouse

When Babs Seed came to visit her cousin, Apple Bloom in Ponyville, Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara were soon to strike. As Babs went to see their float, Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara ridiculed it. Their behavior proved to be toxic as it encouraged the otherwise kind Babs Seed to act as a bully. Bonding over their shared bullying over the Blank Flanks, Silver Spoon, Diamond Tiara and Babs Seed started to hang out, they got Milkshakes together, threw stuff at the crusaders, made fun of their disguises and even took over their Crusaders tree house. After the crusaders saved Babs Seed from falling off a cliff, she realized the error of her ways and lashed out against Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. Nervous the two steadily walked back on the platform they were on, falling into a mud pit with a pig.[8]

Era of Twilight

Personal life

Silver Spoon is "wealthy and privileged"[9] though little of her actual personal life is clear. Prior to the Crusaders gaining their cutie marks, her circle of friends only really included Diamond Tiara, though several other fillies tended to look up to her and like her enough to go to her and Tiara's parties, such as Snips, Snails, Liza Doolots, Tornado Bolt, Piña Colada and Alula, as well as others. Her circle of influence spreads out to other fillies as well, such as Little Red and others. After the Crusaders gained their cutie marks, she became a good, if somewhat distant friend to the group.

Although she's wealthy, she doesn't appear to be as historically important to Ponyville, though the accomplishments of her family are unclear.

Personality

Relationships

Behind the scenes

Silver Spoon's name is derived from the term "silver spoon", which is used to denote an individual who was born into wealth and privilege. She was voiced by Shannon Chan-Kent and has appeared in a handful of secondary works, such as comics and software. Her episode debut was "Call of the Cutie".

Focus episode

In an AMA in 2019, Jim Miller mentioned that there was a planned episode focusing on Silver Spoon, but it was turned down as Hasbro believed that her and Diamond Tiara's story was "over".

In other media

Comics

Silver Spoon's background and family life was allueded to in Don't You Forget About Us, where she relayed to the Cutie Mark Crusaders and Snips and Snails that she and Diamond Tiara were held to a higher standard due to their wealthy background, causing them to be stressed and unsure how to interact with other foals. In the arc, we also see just how much Silver Spoon cares for Diamond Tiara, showing absolute distress when Tiara nearly fell to her death when a cliff collapsed beneath her.

A changeling who took the form of Silver Spoon was a minor villain in The Return of Queen Chrysalis.

Equestria Girls

In Equestria Girls, Silver Spoon is a minor villain who appears by Diamond Tiara's side constantly. She appears to be a freshman and acts somewhat antongistic towards Twilight Sparkle. Her only speaking line was in "Best Trends Forever".

In fanfiction

Generally speaking, Silver Spoon's characterization in fanon tends to play up her softer, kinder personality than Tiara's but also her elusive side, sometimes portraying her as someone who is either ashamed of who they are, or keeps a low profile in public due to her apparent fame.

Fan reception

A joke among early fans of the show was that Silver Spoon's special talent was being a brat.[citation needed]

Silver Spoon's reception was generally better than Tiara's in the earlier episodes, given how Silver Spoon's kinder side was shown off much more (that is to say it was shown off at all) than her friends, such as when she clapped at Granny Smith's story.
