Rarity makes friends rather quickly and has one of the most active social lives in the Mane Six. Like Spike, Rarity has friends all over Equestria and beyond. Despite her sincere generosity and selfless nature, Rarity has on occasion shown extreme selfishness to the point whee lives were risked. These are outliers of her personality however as Rarity is almost always shown to have a big heart. Although not as academically inclined as Twilight, Rarity is very intelligent and well-educated. She commands a reasonable knowledge of history and enjoys reading a good book. Rarity's strong suit however, is the arts. Rarity is a prolific fashion designer, artist, playwright singer, actress and thatcher.

Rarity was born in Ponyville and helped raise Sweetie Belle, her younger sister. Although the two are very close, it's been implied they had a slightly estranged relationship in the past. It was revealed that Sweetie held a grudge against Rarity when she believed her to have ruined her 5th birthday. As a young mare, Rarity was a fan of My Tiny Gecko and attended Ponyville High.

Like here dearest friends, Rarity appears to be a spatio-temporal constant. Several time periods and alternate worlds have been shown to have their own version of Rarity, and each time they've befriended the other members of the Mane Six or Spike in some capacity. That said, Rarity isn't always portrayed as a heroic figure, such as Sombra's world in which Rarity was shown to be a mean-spirited, petty and self-absorbed mare.

History

Foalhood and early adult life

Rarity in the 1980s

Rarity was born to her parents in Ponyville over twenty-years before Grogar's awakening.[4] As a filly, she attended Ponyville schoolhouse. In her childhood and possibly through her early adulthood, she lived in her parents house. Rarity seemed to have went to school with Cheerilee,[5] but this would be put in question as later stories expanded on Cheerilee's background.[note 1] From a young age, Rarity had a keen outlook for designing. She tried to help design costumes for a school play but mysteriously, her horn started to glow and drag her out outside. Her horn dragged her across Equestria until she came face-to-face with a large rock. Although initially angry that her destiny was a "dumb rock", the rock eventually cracked open to reveal several jewels inside. Inspired by the sight, Rarity would later use the gems to design her costumes for the play. her teacher, her classmates and the audience which attended were all greatly impressed. Content with her job, Rarity recieved her Cutie Mark then and there.[5]

Rarity still seemed to live with her parents when Sweetie Belle turned five. She help to host Sweetie Belle's fifth birthday party, but ended up outshining her sister and eventually, the party attendees didn't care about Sweetie Belle's party but being with Rarity. Although Sweetie Belle blamed Rarity for it, Rarity didn't intend for such an event to happen and really tried to divert the attendees attention to Sweetie Belle to mixed results.[6]

At some point, Rarity attended "Ponyville High". In her youth, she was a fan of "My Tiny Gecko", a show about aliens and had her ow stuffed plush bear.[7] Rarity was a fan of classical stories, with The Princess's New Clothes bearing particularly near and dear to her heart.[7]

Early adventures

Rarity and her dreamy Blueblood

Like her dearest friends, Rarity's life was forever changed after the coming, and redemption, of Princess Luna. The normally high maintance and prissy pony, would become an adventurer and hero. When Rarity heard the news of Twilight getting tickets for the Grand Galloping Gala, she imagined a beautiful wedding where she would marry Princess Blueblood. Rarity hounded Twilight for her tickets, trying to do nice favors for her like giving her an umbrella on a storming day, getting a messy mane in the process. Rarity tried again to get the tickets fro Twilight by making her a dress, but it was unsuccessful. At night, Rarity realized what she was doing was wrong and manipulative and so she decided to buy dinner for Twilight as an apology. Twilight decided that if none of her friends could go to the Grand Galloping Gala with her, then she wouldn't either, and returned her tickets to Celestia. Celestia however, gave Twilight six more tickets so Rarity and the others could attend. Content, the seven friends went out and enjoyed dinner together.[8]

Even early in her adventures, Rarity was known to make dresses for all of her friends.[9]

How would ponies swim anyway?

Despite her posh exterior, Rarity deeply cared for her friends, even in their earliest adventures together. While on a vacation to a beach, Rarity was asked to climb a mountain by Applejack. Rarity politely declined, wanting t avoid a sunburn, while Twilight asked if Rarity wanted to go swimming. Rarity once again declined but once Twilight started to drown, she didn't hesitate one bit to jump into the water to save her friend. Twilight wondered why she did it since it messed up her mane, but Rarity insisted that Twilight's safety was far more important to her than her mane. Overjoyed, the two hugged and Twilight exclaimed that she loved Rarity.[10]

Despite her loving nature, Rarity was still fundamentally a self-absorbed mare. When Twilight wanted to hang out with her friends - any of them, she tried to spend time with Rarity but Rarity was to caught up in her own world to notice. Much to Twilight's chagrin, Rarity only noticed Twilight's presence when she called her cute. Later, Rainbow Dash flew Twilight to a party where Rarity and the others held a Twilight's 50th day after her birthday party, complete with a Twilight's 50th day after her birthday party cake, which bore Twilight's face. Although they claimed it was to show Twilight they still loved her, it was just an excuse to have a party.[11]

"Whatever shall we do?"

For all of her grace, Rarity lacked much of the fearless nature of some of her friends. As such, she nearly fainted at the sight of an upcoming stampede, though regained her strength when Applejack saved the day. Rarity praised Applejack and days later, attended a celebration in Applejack's honor. When she saw Applejack was exhausted and not like herself, Rarity was worried and concerned, in her own Rarity way. Later, Rarity helped Applejack out by helping her buck and move apples.[12] Pinkie Pie pranked Rarity by swapping her flowers out, making her sneeze. Though annoyed, Rarity appreciated the good-natured prank. Rarity attended Gilda's party, where she saw just how ugly and mean-spirited Gilda could be.[13]

Presumably after hearing all the hubba-hubba, Rarity attended Trixie's performance. After seeing how horrible Trixie was, Rarity challenged her to a magic duel. Although Rarity gave a very respectable performance in her own right, Trixie utterly humiliated her, causing her to run away and cry. Later that night, Rarity witnessed the Ursa Minor attack Ponyville, Trixie cowardly running away and Twilight defeating the best. She praised Twilight and helped her realize she shouldn't be ashamed to show off her skills.[14]

After hearing the news that a Dragon was going to destroy Equestria by his snores, Rarity teamed up with her friends to stop the menace. She geared up at her house and reunited with her friends as they set off to climb the mountain. Their climb up the mountain started off rather smooth, but grew increasingly more complicated as Fluttershy's scared demeanor got in the way of otherwise simple task. They eventually found the dragon's cave went to confront the dragon. Rarity tried to use her charms, but got greedy when she saw the dragon's hoard and was forced to flee. Eventually the dragon grew annoyed and attacked the ponies, Rarity included, but after a good talking to by Fluttershy, he left them be. Rarity later praised Fluttershy for her bravery.[15]

As a nasty storm brew, Rarity got in a petty squabble with Applejack. As the storm raged on, Applejack and Rarity ended up embracing. Twilight invited them into Golden Oak Library to beat the storm. Now in the library, Twilight was happy to have her first sleepover with friends. Rarity and Applejack both wanted Twilight to have fun, but the tension kept rising. They argued over a makeover and Applejack grew annoyed over her scary stories. During a game of Truth or Dare, Applejack dared Rarity to go outside in the rain, ruining her mane, while Rarity dared Applejack to dress fancy. After a disastrous pillow fight, Rarity and Applejack were forced to sleep in the same bed. They continued to argue but when a tree fell in the library, they worked together to help Twilight and grew closer as a result.[16]

As Zecora came to visit Ponyville Rarity locked herself up in Sugarcube Corner in order to protect herself from the 'evil enchantress'. When Apple Bloom went missing, Rarity and the others went to explore the Everfree Forest to find her. They found her near a patch of Poisonous Joke plants. The following morning, Rarity's coat and mane became extremely thick and clumpy, appearing noodley. She and the others went back in the Everfree Forest to confront the enchantress. At her hut, Rarity and the others thrashed the inside when looking for a cure. When she thought she had kidnapped Apple Bloom, Rarity stood to defend her from any harm that may come her way, but when she realized it was a misunderstanding and the enchantress, named Zecora, was a kind zebra, she apologized and they later became great friends.[17]

When preparing for the Welcome Princess Celestia party, Rarity received a Parasprite from Twilight. When the parasprites infested Ponyville, Rarity tried to find a way to help her friends but none of their methods worked until Pinkie Pie saved the day with music.[18]

Sometime later, during winter, Rarity enthusiastically participated in the Winter Wrap Up. After attending Mayor Mare's speech, Rarity paired up with Doctor Hooves and Fluttershy deep in song. Soon, Rarity began to set up her nest-making table and started to get to work, making nest for critters. Once the initial excitement died down Rarity eased her way into her job and designed a elegant nest. Twilight tried to help and made a nest herself, but the results were....terrible. Spike chastised the nest, leading Rarity to give him a stern look. Rarity politely asked Twilight to do something else and remade her nest for her. As quite some time passed, Rarity still only made the one nest, out of several hundred. The wrap up was shaping up to be an utter disaster, but eventually under the organized leadership of Twilight Sparkle, Rarity got back on track, creating several nest within hours. Rarity worked long into the night, and after it all, admired the spring she helped create.[19] During one of Applejacks' and Rainbow Dash's competitions, Rarity cheered both of them on.[20]

Tartarus hath no fury like a sassy unicorn scorned

While working on a new piece of attire, Rarity was interrupted by Twilight and Applejack. Though annoyed by their rude entry and uncivilized nature, she put on a happy smile and made the two feel welcomed. Twilight wanted Rarity to help her button up her dress for the Gala, but Rarity insisted to make a new outfit for her instead. She also wanted to make a new outfit for Applejack, but Applejack refused. After Rainbow Dash barged in, Rarity decided to make new outfits for all of her friends and even to hold a fashion show of their own, showing off the new outfits.[1]

After tirelessly working on all the dresses, Rarity finally managed to show them all off...only for her friends to reject every last one of them. Though disheartened, Rarity tried even harder to match their desired dresses, which proved to be a disastrous ordeal in of itself. Her friends began to demand to much from Rarity, leaving the poor unicorn in a dampened state. Eventually, she managed to create each dress exactly to her friends' specifications and with the new dresses, the fashion show was held. And it was a disaster. With the costumes being laughable at best, Rarity's hard work was mocked mercilessly, leading to the white mare to become theatrically depressed.[1]

Realizing the harm they've done, Rarity's friends banded together to create the dress Rarity created to help cheer her up. The plan was a total success and Rarity was once again at full strength. With a new resolve, Rarity used her original dress designs to host another fashion show and this time, she wowed her audience and critics.[1]

K.O.

One can say many things about Rarity, but something one cannot take away from her is the fact that she's an incredibly hard worker. When Princess Celestia invited Twilight to a special party in Canterlot, Rarity was the first to think about the fashion of her friends and set out to tirelessly work on their attire. Moments before the party, Rarity was barely conscious, simply "wobbling". As Fluttershy delivered the "kinda bad" materials, Rainbow Dash got bags to haul all the food while Applejack just noticed Rarity's bad state. Twilight attended to her friends needs, but through sheer determination to make her friends look fabulous, Rarity got up and used her magic to instantly create beautiful dresses. At the party, Rarity's dresses were well liked by many, even Princess Celestia herself. The party presumably went well afterwards as Rainbow Dash thanked Rarity for all the hardwork.[21] Twilight Sparkle tried to get her attention when she felt like everypony was ignoring but Rarity didn't noticed. After Twilight enranged Fluttershy, Rarity was caught in a blast of "Flutterrage"[22] Rarity oversaw Applejack when she was falling in a depression over not being able to properly wrangle up a buffalo and was presumably hit in the face with a pie when Applejack showed off her true talents.[23]

Day of Discord

Big adventure

Changeling wars

Rarity spotting the Changelings lair

On the day after the secret Changeling invasion of Ponyville, Rarity greeted a changeling in the guise of Sweetie Belle. Although concerned for her sisters well-being after the Changeling replied in a very robotic way, Rarity went about her day. Sometime later, she visited her friends near Golden Oak Library in order to discuss the weird behavior of their fellow ponyvillians. Before Rarity or her could could come up with a reasonable assessment, the ponyvillians attacked Rarity and her friends with confronted expressions and zombie like poster. Horrified by this, Rarity and her friends made a run for it and too refuge in Golden Oak Library. In the library, Twilight brought up the possibility that the civilians who attacked them may be Changelings all along. Rarity was the first, and seemingly only, pony who managed to follow what Twilight was saying as she gasped in shock over the situation. Sometime later, Pinkie Pie took control over the situation and taught Rarity and the others how to blend into the situation. Although Rarity facehoofed at the absurdity of the situation, she followed suit. Walking like a zombie, Rarity's motions managed to fool two Changelings. After Rarity came across the cocooned Derpy she began to wonder where the Changelings were keeping all of their victims. Almost as soon as wondered it, Spike noticed that Town Hall was pulsating an odd, green color. Convinced that this was the Changelings temporary lair, Rarity and the others stormed the hall.[24]

Rarity bravely charged into the hall, fully expecting the fight of her life as she demanded her sister back. Although there was a moment of quiet, the Changelings soon made themselves visible. As the Changelings began to shapeshift into the Mane Six in order to distract them, Rarity and Applejack remarked the situation was "nightmarish". Nonetheless, the fight soon commenced. Rarity changed up Pinkie Pie's manestyle in order to make her unique from the hoard of Pinkie Pie Changelings. Dash commanded Rarity to picture the Changelings as if they were last years fashion. Upon doing so, Rarity took out a number of the Changelings by herself. Although the girls were winning, the Changelings still had a numbers advantage on them. In order to even the odds, Pinkie Pie blasted the Changelings with her party cannon, demobilizing them all.[25]

"Well...that escalated quickly...then ended abruptly"
— Rarity[source]

After the battle, Rarity was disheartened that Sweetie Belle, Apple Bloom nor Scootaloo were nowhere to be seen. After lamenting, Rarity assumed they just went somewhere else and went to look for them, though her search was interrupted by Pinkie Pie teasing her. Soon, Spike received a message from none-other than Queen Chrysalis herself. Neither Rarity nor Applejack were in the mood for Chrysalis's rotten antics and both demanded the queen to tell them where the fillies were. After Chrysalis showed them their sisters, Rarity questioned if they were the real fillies, though Apple Bloom's endless desire for a cutie mark made it apparent that they were the real ones very quickly. The Queen gave the mares an ultimatum, either they get to the girls in three days...or else. As the girls were planning for the trip, Rarity wondered if they could get a handsome Royal Guard to accompany them. Despite her seemingly shallow intentions, Rarity was among the first mares to leave the hall to save their sisters, but was pulled back by Twilight. With all the plans in check, Rarity and the others began to march into the sunset, ready to embark on their greatest adventure yet.[26]

The following day, Rarity and the others made it all the way to Macintosh Hills.

Summer wrap up

During the Summer Wrap Up festival, Rarity spent some much needed quality time with her parents and extended family. She told them stories of her various adventures, such as a time when she got her hair stuck the "biggest" beehive.[27] Spike was selling a badly made toy version of Rarity at the same festival. That night, Rarity danced at the Hoedown Coral as Vinyl Scratch played her beat. The following day, Rarity participated in the actual Summer Wrap Up event with the help of Fluttershy and Dr. Hooves.[28]

High adventure

School of Friendship

Rarity goes to Applewood!

Early in the morning, Rarity gleefully greeted her friends with news that their Friendship Diary was indeed going to be a movie. Together with the girls, she traveled to Applewood, the city the film was to be produced in, in order to meet up with the cast and crew of the film. In Lot 12 of Palomino Pictures, Rarity met with Wormer Horsehooves, the director of their film and greeted him kindly. Wormer was warm and kind towards Rarity, but made it clear he didn't feel like he was cut out to direct the film in the modern day and age of artificial and superficial films. Instead, he passed the responsibility to Rarity and the others, hoping they could make a more authentic experience. Rarity and the others of course agreed and went to start directing right away.[29]

Almost instantly, Rarity was at odds with her fellow crew. She merely sighed at Pinkie's idea of having the record for the most whipped cream in the film. It soon became apparent that Rarity's vision for the film was a rather biased one, scenes revolving around her only focused on how others bettered themselves, not how she grew as a pony and never exposed her flaws. Tensions continued to rise and eventually the others decided to direct their own films and compile it into one. Rarity filmed The Celestia Falcon, a crime drama noir film staring Rarity as she solved crimes. In her adventures, she interrogated Fluttershy, who had stole PRincess Celestia's own pet bird. According to Rarity, Fluttershy was a "femme fatale" ("Fatal Woman")[30]

Rarity wasn't pleased with Dashie's film

Later, Rarity watched My Name is Rainbow Dash and was utterly horrified by the results, claiming the film was deafening, inaccurate nonsense. Predictably, Rarity was puzzled by Pinkie Pie's film, Ponies of the Afternoon, but had nothing but praise for her film, but was once again puzzled by Fluttershy's film, March of the Critters. Finally, Rarity was more confused and even a bit sympathetic for Applejack's film, The Adventures of Applejack. After Horsehooves showed his disappointment at the film, Rarity got on the stage to own up to her mistake. Although she was at first confused by the crowd bursting into laughter, she shrugged it off and and happily walked away with her dear friends.[31]

Woe is her

When Pinkie Pie went on a good-natured but destructive tour through Ponyville with the powers of the Golden Apple, she turned Rarity's sapphire necklace even brighter than it usually was.[32] Now with a painfully bright and shiny necklace, Rarity met up with the others to discuss the matters at hoof. As soon as Rarity said her name however, Pinkie instantly joined them and their conversation. Rarity tried to explain why what Pinkie Pie was doing was wrong in a polite manner, but it didn't go through to her. Soon, Pinkie teleported away as Rarity bore witness to the chaos Pinkie Pie caused with her new found powers. Eventually, the girls managed to convince Pinkie Pie to stop. Together, Rarity helped rebuild and clean up the town. After the ordeal was all said and done, Rarity joined the others at the "Sorry party" and giggled at the sight of Rainbow Dash suffering from a PTSD induced freakout regarding balloons.[33]

Rarity amazed by Pinkie Pie

For Nightmare Night, Rarity dressed as the Phantom of the Stablehouse and decorated the Castle of Two Sisters in Delicate Silk Draperies as apart of an elaborate prank on her students. When she caught wind of how dangerous her draperies were in combination with the other pranks left by her friends, she didn't hesitate to rush to the castle to try and to protect her students. By the time she made it to the castle, she found her students alive and well, having conquered the castles many traps by themselves

Final adventures and later life

Rarity presumably passed away at some point before the age of robots and aliens existing in Equestria.[34] Her cause of death, if she died, is currently unknown and details of her later life are virtually non-existent.

Personal life

The Weaver a piece by Rarity

Rarity is a member of the Mane Six and represents the Element of Generosity. She is a white Unicorn and though not nearly as powerful as Twilight Sparkle in the magical arts, is strong enough to hold her own against most threats. Befitting of her element, Rarity is kind and charitable, though can be stuck up and even violent in certain situations. In spite of her posh, well groomed and highly civilized nature, Rarity is incredibly brave and will go through great lengths to protect those she cares about. Rarity, as her element denotes, is a kind-hearted pony who often goes out of her way to lend a helping hoof to others, whether they be friends or strangers. Despite her kind heart, Rarity can be vain, rude, mean and even violent at times. In spite of these flaws, Rarity maintains good relations with most everyone she knows given her generous actions and caring heart. Rarity is a loving friend and sister who showers her friends and family with affection. Although she may appear to be rather "prissy", Rarity is more then capable of holding her own in danger and is willing to fight back when attacked. Much like Twilight, Rarity often dislikes engaging in direct combat however and instead prefers to find other solutions. Although, unlike Twilight who tries to find diplomatic solutions, Rarity instead prefers to cause confusion or annoyance on the enemy lines. Rarity has a bad tendency to force her opinions and mindsets onto others and gets angry when they don't share the same opinions. Rarity is very dramatic and will become miserable when stuff doesn't go her way.

Classy, wise and imposing

Rarity lives alone with her pet cat, Opalescence in Carousel Boutique, but is often visited by her little sister, Sweetie Belle and occasionally by her parents. Rarity is both a proud buisnesspony and artist whose made quite a name for herself among Ponyville and elsewhere given her high quality goods and big heart. Her artwork is usually displayed in the forms of dresses and fashionable attire, but she's also an incredibly skilled cartoonist, painter and crafter, capable of drawing and painting in various art styles.[35] Like Fluttershy, Rarity seems to appreciate anime and has drawn anime inspired works before.[35] Although not a fighter by heart, Rarity has particupated in many battles and gone on many adventures in order to save those dear to her. To those in Ponyville, Rarity is a hero. Not only for her righteous and heroic heart, but for her kind and generous nature, always giving out advice and helpful insight to those who need it. In spite of her vanity, Rarity doesn't judge those with "inferior" looks and treats the as equals. Rarity appears to be one of the older members of the Mane Six, as her appearance hasn't changed much in quite some years, given her appearing the same at Sweetie Belle's 5th birthday. Rarity also appeared to have slightly more mature features as a filly then her friends, but not by much. Being a business owner and presumably founder, it makes sense that Rarity be more advanced in years. Although it (understandably) doesn't come up to often, Rarity political views are starkly different then her friends. She's shown to believe in more economically sound views and trusts business men such as Filthy Rich over the kind and down to earth, if somewhat incompetent Mayor Mare.

My Little Ponies' little ponies

Like her friends, Rarity has become quite the pop culture icon in Equestria, though not nearly to the extent of Twilight or Rainbow Dash, or even Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy. A donkey bearing Rarity's semblance was a main character of the hit show My Little Donkey, which was popular within the fictional universe of Power Ponies and Rarity has appeared as a main character in Spike's cartoon series he made when they were away defeating Queen Chrysalis. Rarity was the main character of The Toy and the Mouse alongside her sister, Sweetie Belle. Although heroic and kind-hearted, Rarity has shown a darker side to her nature at times. She was willing to let the Timberwolves destroy Ponyville to save her own skin and has even kidnapped a lawyer in order to scam an otherwise law abiding citizen out of what was rightfully his. These traits are generally few and far between a Rarity has proven herself to be pure and selfless on many occasions, such as when she didn't hesitate to accompany Spike into the Dragonlands, helped out Coco with her theater project and the many times she helped those less fortunate than her. It's been shown that Rarity's good-will can be self-destructive and dangerous in some situations. She was manipulated by Nightmare into giving up and falling into her darkness when she convinced her that her friends didn't respect or care about her any longer. Likewise, Rarity's love for her friends can compel her to do great things, such as beating the Nightmare and becoming herself once again.

Personality

Rarity's picky, non-adventurous nature

Rarity is a complicated pony with many, sometimes contradictory sides of her personality. Rarity is somewhat stuck up, occasionally looking down on others for whatever reason, but never judges them on the inside. She's kind-hearted, warm and a loving friend who shows goodwill and kindness to total strangers, usually not expecting anything in return. Rarity is shown to be good friends with several shopkeepers around Ponyville, who she often gives advice to and helps out, usually in methods of making their shops seem more appealing.

Rarity has a deep appreciation of all forms of life, as she's been depicted as showing deep compassion to animals, ponies and the anthropomorphic citizens who live beyond the Badlands alike. Although she has an affinity for attractive stallions and cute animals, she has befriended much less appealing creatures, such as Stephen Magnet, Bookworm and Mr. Titter Tree.

Rarity is not very adventurous, and sometimes appears to be downright cowardly such as the time when she nearly let a pack of Timberwolves invade Ponyville to save her own hide, but is brave and courageous.

Rarity is very protective over those she loves, threatening to rip apart Garble for threatening Spike and even stood up to Queen Chrysalis in order to find information on where she's keeping Sweetie Belle. Rarity is sometimes seen as a source of wisdom for her younger friends. Indeed Rarity can be quite wise on matters regarding the heart. Rarity is a sentimental pony who can't stand families being torn apart, she took it upon herself to help Cheerilee mend her estranged relationship with her long lost sister.

Despite her good nature, Rarity can also be among the most immature members of the Mane Six, and is quite susceptible to childish, theatrical outburst or bouts of exaggerated depression when stuff doesn't go her way. Despite being a naturally charitable and generous pony, Rarity can be greedy and selfish at times, sch as when she tried to steal a Dragon's hoard of gems or when she got upset at Fluttershy for getting more famous then her through her modeling career. Regardless, in serious moments, Rarity can be quite mature. Rarity is shown to be a forgiving and understanding pony, not holding any negative feelings towards her friends for any uncouth behavior they may throw at her. It's been shown that Rarity's innate behavior is that to help people, but to help them her way, not understanding that her way doesn't work for everypony.

Although a selfless and heroic mare, Rarity has sometimes shown a blatant cowardly side, such as letting a pack of Timber Wolves simply attack Ponyville so she could run and hide.[36] Rarity is altruistic and can't stand to see others suffer. Her altruistic and caring nature managed to win over Capper, turning him from a crook who was willing to sell her into slavery into an ally who truly grew to care about her.

In spite of her affectionate friendship with Spike, she's sometimes shown to find him annoying or dislike some of his habits, and openly shunned him during the Night of the Living Apples arc. When under the effects of a natural truth serum, the first thing Rarity blurted out was just how much she loved all of her friends and she told Twilight that she means just as much to her, as she means to Twilight. Although vain and obsessed with her own self-image, Rarity is nonetheless a selfless and brave pony whose gotten down and dirty to help others, such as when she hid in a pile of mud in order to help Sweetie Belle in the Sisterhooves Social[37] or jumping in an ocean to save Twilight from drowning, getting her mane wet in the process.[10] Rarity is also not averse to going on adventures, but will usually complain on the way. Rarity is sometimes shown to be easily manipulated, such as when she let Sweetie Belle manipulate her into going on a field trip with her.[38]

Rarity is a great older sister, or at least she really tries to be. She and Sweetie Belle almost always get along, and Sweetie Belle looks up to and admires her older sister tremendously. Rarity truly and deeply cares for Sweetie Belle and fell into a depression when Sweetie Belle went missing on her field trip. Despite their closeness, it's implied that the two sisters were slightly estranged before the events of the show, as Rarity was put off by having to spend time with her. It appears their past relationship may have been somewhat rocky too, with Sweetie Belle blaming the disaster that was her 5th birthday on Rarity. Regardless, the two share an unbreakable bond of sisterly love and care. Curiously, Rarity and Sweetie Belle are often portrayed as being at odds during in-universe fiction stories.

Rarity shows aunt-like love for one of her best friends, Spike, doting on him and giving him cool-sounding nicknames to make him feel ore important. Rarity has been known to drop everything to make sure Spike was okay and even followed him into dragon territories to make sure he was safe, twice. It was partially due to Rarity's love for Spike that she slightly overpowered the Nightmare Rarity force, and partly the love of her friends and sister. Although not shown as much, Rarity is quite good friends with Apple Bloom and Scootaloo. While Sweetie Belle was her primary concern during the Changeling wars, she was still very much so worried for the two other fillies.

Despite not being adventurous in the traditional sense, Rarity has shown a strong interest in detective-like stories and enjoys acting as a detective in her own right.

Appearance

Rarity is an average sized, white unicorn with blue gems for a Cutie Mark. Rarity takes a great deal of pride in her looks, routinely taking "beauty rests" and goes far out of her way to keep her mane in good condition. As a filly, Rarity looked much the same, only smaller with a slightly rounder body.

Age

Rarity appears to be one of the older members of the Mane Six, though it's hard to tell. Unlike some of her other friends, Rarity has been confirmed to have gone to college, and most likely graduated,[3] while Twilight was still in school by the time she moved to Ponyville.[39] However, the waters become muddy from this point on.

  • Rarity went to elementary school with Cheerilee, who was in college when Twilight was just a filly.[40] However, the same episode that revealed Rarity went to school with Cheerilee took place on the exact day Twilight hatched Spike, which makes a massive inconsistency.
  • Rarity's appearance didn't change when Sweetie Belle was only 5 years old, which may mean she stopped growing before that point. Assuming Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom are nearly the same age, this likely means Rarity is older than Applejack.
  • Rarity briefly dated 8-Bit, who is around as old as Shining Armor, since they went to college together in the same class. Shining Armor was shown to be in college before Twilight attended P.S.C.F.G.U., and dated Princess Cadance when she attended. This puts 8-Bits age at 10~15 years older than Twilight's. Considering the signifanct gap, this likely means Rarity is closer in age to 8-Bit and Shining Armor than Twilight.

Relationships

Rarity is very protective of her little sister, Sweetie Belle and loves her deeply. Whenever she fears Sweetie is unhappy, Rarity goes out of her way to make her sister happy and tend to her needs, something Sweetie occasionally takes advantage of. Likewise, whenever Sweetie Belle is in harms way, Rarity springs into action to defend her or rescue her. The feelings are mutual as Sweetie Belle has great admiration for her sister and views her as her hero.

Although Rarity dearly loves all of her friends, she has developed particularly special bonds with Twilight Sparkle, Applejack and Spike.

Twilight has considered Rarity to be her best friend on a few occasions, such as the Ponyville Days event and the two often enjoy each others company. Being the only magic casters in the Mane Six, the two often work together to solve complicated problems that raw strength just can't cut. Although Rarity is sometimes put off by Twilight's slightly rustic way of life, she always puts her differences aside to have a good time with her dear friend. Rarity and Applejack have a somewhat vitriolic friendship. The two argue with one another constantly and just so happen to be on the opposite side of many things, whether it be views on problems or other, more complicated issues. The two are often forced to bare the others company due to their younger sisters being the best of friends. Despite their differences, Applejack and Rarity will not hesitate to risk their life to protect the other and love each other as friends. The two are sometimes united under circumstances, such as protecting their sisters from harms way or helping out other friends. Spike is in love with Rarity, and considers her to be "everything" to him. Spike is always going out of his way to help Rarity or shower her with affection and gave her a box of chocolate when Ponyville had a party celebrating the ponies they love. For the most part, Rarity doesn't appear to share the same romantic feelings towards Spike, but finds his jesters charming and truly cares for him as a friend. Rarity peppers Spike with friendly, sometimes sisterly love
