Grogar, the Father of Monsters was once the first ruler of Equestria, but was deposed by Gusty the Great who had stolen his Bewitching Bell.

History

Emperor of Equestria

Grogar's rule was an ancient, yet unforgettable one. Grogar rose to power in Equestria's earliest days, when it was just a collection of farms and pastures, he ruled with an iron fist, conquering other lands as the Emperor of Equestria and giving birth to the horrors that still blight the lands to the current eras as the "Father of Monsters". Grogar's reign left a strong impression on the villains Tirek, Queen Chrysalis and King Sombra, who have, to varying extents, revered him ever since.

Eventually however, Grogar was defeated and banished by Gusty the Great, who took away his bell and his magic with it. Legends of his deeds became diluted until he was held to be a figure of children's tales-such as Gusty the Great-or utterly forgotten, as seen in the case of Cozy Glow. Discord later impersonated Grogar in an attempt to bolster Twilight Sparkle's confidence in her ability to rule over all of Equestria. This backfired when the Legion of Doom, having recovered the bell, gained the use of the true Grogar's magic for themselves.

Personality

Little is known of the true Grogar's personality, except that he was a cruel and wicked tyrant.

While impersonating Grogar, Discord adopted a domineering but logical personality, exhorting his fellow villains to work together in order to achieve their common purpose. However, he made it clear that he was in charge, and didn't hesitate to employ his magic against the other villains in order to halt their bickering.

Abilities and traits

According to Gusty the Great, Grogar gained power from fear, and at one point was strong enough to resist unicorn magic "stronger than a thousand armies." Most if not all of his power, however, seems to have been tied to his Bewitching Bell, as he was utterly defeated when it was stolen from him.

While posing as Grogar, Discord demonstrated a number of incredible feats, such as bringing King Sombra back from the dead, freeing Cozy Glow and Tirek from Tartarus, giving Tirek enough magic to regain a more youthful and muscular state, summoning four villains to his lair, and then transporting Sombra from there to the Crystal Empire.

Grogar appeared in The "Most Evil" Q&A Ever on Instagram, in which he expressed his jealousy of the working relationship between Penn Jillette and Teller. He also shared several Instagram photos of himself visiting the Leaning Tower of Piza, the Taj Mahal, and the Great Sphinx of Giza, as well as sporting a Ponies are Phonies T-shirt.

Behind the scenes

The first version of Grogar was the main villain of the G1 My Little Pony episode arc, "The Return of Tambleon", where he was the ruler of the Realm of Darkness and attempted to take over all of Ponyland. Grogar's counterpart in My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights shares the design of this version, as the Friendship is Magic version of Grogar had not yet been revealed.

In Friendship is Magic, the false Grogar is voiced by Doc Harris, a Canadian actor mostly known for his role as the narrator in various anime, most prominently, Dragon Ball Z.
