Ian Flynn admitted to watching and liking My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic but "fell behind" after season 1, with "occasional" rewatches. He considers himself a casual fan and had fond memories of the original cartoon, with "You Can't Stop the Smooze" being stuck in his head. In order to prepare himself for writing Feats of Friendship, he checked out a "few wikis" (!!!) to get caught up and watched and read a few episodes and comics in order to make his contribution to the mythos more worthwhile. He claimed his experience working with Tony Fleecs was a positive one, as he was "super chill" and also said that they worked together prior on a story for Star Wars Adventures.
