IDW Publishing, short for Ideas and Design Works, is a comic publishing company responsible for publishing the lions share of Generation 4 comics. Although other comic publishers have produced comics for My Little Pony and indeed some were more prolific, IDW is unarguably the most well-known and infamous of the publishers for various reasons.

History

Founded by Ted Adams, Alex Garner, Kris Oprisko, and Robbie Robbins, in 1999 IDW Publishing has had a long-lasting relationship with Habsro beginning in 2005 when they acquired the rights to publish Transformers comics. This has sense expanded to other Hasbro properties such as G.I. Joe, ROM, Jem and the Holograms...CLUE, and starting in 2012, My Little Pony. The first IDW storyline, and generally regarded as among the best, was "The Return of Queen Chrysalis", a darker take on source material that would introduce staples that defined the comics, such as the creative team of Katie Cook and Andy Price, the far more sarcastic and cartoony sense of humor, and the ponies venturing into places never seen in the cartoon show, encountering strange and unique characters and creatures in he process.

As of 2021, their work on Friendship is Magic has become one of the longest comic book seies based off a television show ever produced, only beaten out by DC Comics Scooby-Doo series'.
