My Little Pony: Legends of Magic is a limited comic series published from April 2017 to -- 2018 by IDW Publishing, consisting of 12 issues and an annual. A prequel series set in pre-unification Equestria, Legends of Magic explores the early lives and subsequent adventures of the Pillars of Equestria and how they became heroes.
The series has a somewhat darker tone than most of My Little Pony media, with depictions of death and suffering, especially in the later half of the run. Perhaps because of its more bleak tone, the comic was successful, being the second best selling comic published by IDW in April 2017 (behind Star Trek/Green Lantern[1]) The series was so successful that it received a follow-up successor series in My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights, which followed up on the plot points established within Legends of Magic. It was also the only My Little Pony comic to receive an annual aside from the main My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on-going.
