Scales ruled over the Dragon Lands as Dragon Lord at an unknown time in the past, some time before the reign of Torch.

History

Early in her life, Scales was a homeless dragon with little food and no friends. During one rainy night, she was approached by an Ancient Dragon Lord and invited to a feast in his cave. Scales enjoyed herself, but saw her host as a weak ruler and decided to seize his position for herself. In a daring attack, she gained possession of the Bloodstone Scepter, which recognized her as the new Dragon Lord. Scales' first act was to banish the former dragon lord to her own former hovel, where she gloated over him as he wept.

Legacy

Despite the underhanded nature of her rise to power, Scales seems to have become a hero among modern day dragons. A Feast of Fire attended by Smolder many centuries later had a recounting of her history in the story A Dream Come True, in which Scales was seen as the cunning protagonist. When Smolder recounted the story to other students at the School of Friendship, however, they were appalled. It seems likely that Scales may have influenced the greedy, self-interested dragon culture that prevailed until Ember ascended to the throne.

Personality

Scales displayed a base lack of gratitude and a power-hungry streak, shown by her turning on a dragon who had shown her nothing but kindness and seizing his throne. Moreover, Scales seems to have been genuinely contemptuous of such compassion as was shown her, glorying in putting the Dragon Lord in the same sorry state she herself had been in when he found her.
