Brief real-world history

Russia has a few predecessor states. Prior to the USSR appearing, the country of Russia was at it's largest during tsarist rule, and it followed the end of the Great Northern War, until the Republic was established by the Provisional Government, following the February Revolution of 1917, and it played a major role for defeating Napoleon, and the House of Romanov ruled the empire from 1721, until 1762.

The problem was, that the empire had a weak economy, the Russian Revolution ruined it, forming the USSR, and the RSFSR, and like all empires, it featured diversity within economies, ethnicity and religion, and it's economy was focused towards farming, with low productivity on large estates worked by serfs, or peasants until 1861. However, there were also many dissidents, which launched a lot of rebellions and assassination attempts, with thousands exiled to Siberia.

The Golden Age of Russia was dominated by Catherine the Great, and the empire functioned as an absolute monarchy until it was toppled in 1917.

After the execution of all the Tsars, Lenin created the Soviet Union, and this is where the popularity of Communism reached it's peak, during the days of the Soviet Union, a few leaders had ruled the USSR, most notably, the dictator, Joseph Stalin. It had it's roots in the 1917 Russian Revolution, when the Russian monarchy was toppled, and Nicholas II was executed along with the entire Romanov family as well, which Stalin committed his life to Marxist-Leninism, which he is quite controversial. Stalin was the most murderous of all the Soviet officials, in effect, became a dictator entirely.

Before World War II, the Soviets signed a non-aggression agreement with the Nazis, but Germany ignored it anyway, and invaded the USSR, but after WWII, relations between the West, and the USSR severely deteroriated, resulting in the Cold War. Stalin died in 1953, and succeeded by Nikita Khrushchev, who began the process of de-Stalinization. Following Khrushchev's ousting and subsequent resignation, Leonid Brezhnev took power for the next few years, but Brezhnev's carefulness to reach choices between consensuses in the Politburo maintained stability in the party and the USSR, and to relax tensions and foster co-operation between the two Cold War superpowers.

Brezhnev's health subsequently got worse, and he died in 1982, hence the boycotting of the Moscow Olympics. Gorbachev's perestroika and glasnost was quite disastrous for the Soviet people, as the popularity of Communism began to diminish under Gorbachev's rule, resulting in the USSR collapsing in 1991.

After the USSR fell, the first president of Russia was Boris Yeltsin, who was replaced by Vladimir Putin, who is the current leader of Russia today.
