==Plot==
After the events of the seventh season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, all the ponies in the land of Equestria prepare for their first Festival of Friendship, overseen by Princess [[Twilight Sparkle (Friendship is Magic)|Twilight Sparkle]] in Canterlot. However, the festival is interrupted when monsters led by [[Tempest Shadow]] (Tempest in Latin America), a unicorn with a short horn, invade Canterlot. Tempest uses magical obsidian stones to petrify Twilight's princess sisters; [[Princess Celestia (Friendship is Magic)|Princess Celestia]] gives Princess Luna incomplete instructions to seek help from "the queen of hiccups ..." before they are both petrified. Abandoned by her friends because of her actions, Twilight is kidnapped by Tempest and brought before King Storm in Canterlot to absorb her magic. Along the way, Tempest earns Twilight's sympathy when she tells him how she lost her horn in an attack by a minor bear when she was a filly, causing hers to reject her own friends for now. dangerous and unstable magic of her. Meanwhile, after Spike alerts Twilight's friends to her capture, Capper, the pirates, and the hippogriff Skystar return to help them infiltrate Canterlot and mount a rescue. King Storm, for his part, uses the power of his scepter to drain Twilight's magic and that of the other princesses, granting her massive power and control over the sun and moon; and he retaliates by conjuring a cyclone on the city with his newly empowered scepter. Tempest asks him to fulfill her part of her bargain and restore her horn from her, but he reveals that he was only using her and attacks her, betraying her as well; but Twilight saves Tempest from the cyclone. Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Spike are shot out of a party cannon and collide with The Storm King. Twilight meets with her friends, who after reconciling work with her to take the scepter from her. As the magic of the scepter spirals out of control, King Storm and Twilight rush to claim it, and both are sucked into the storm. Soon the two return to dry land, and Storm tries to turn the ponies and the dragon into obsidian stones; but Tempest notices, jumps in the middle of her attack and both are petrified, causing the body of King Storm to fall from the balcony of the castle; then shatter into pieces, while the group uses the magic of the scepter to revive Tempest.
The Friendship Festival resumes, and the ponies celebrate with all the allies Twilight's group has made on their adventure. Tempest is discouraged with her horn still broken until Twilight convinces her to join the party by producing a fireworks show with her magic for the Friendship Festival, happily accepting the group's friendship, and reveals that her

Two card packs were released for the film, both by [[Enterplay]] for their ''[[My Little Pony Trading Card Game|Trading Card]]'' and ''[[My Lttle Pony Collectable Card Game|Collectable Card Game]]'' lines respectivly. The first, known as ''[[My Little Pony: The Movie (card set)|My Little Pony: The Movie]]''. The set included 136 cards total, with 81 standard cards, 11 foil cards, 6 foil cards, 12 tattoo cards, and several other misc cards. The second card set was entitled ''[[Seaquestria & Beyond]]'' which contained 142 cards. Both card sets drew their images from stills of the film or promotional artwork.

Several books were produced for the film, such as the four novels printed under the ''[[Beyond Equestria]]'' label, all of which focused on expanding characters, places, and groups that were featured in the film. Other books were released as well, most were however simple activity books. Additionally, the film received two novelizations, for slightly different age demographics. [[River Horse]], the company that produces the ''[[My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria]]'' series of game books produced ''[[Tails of Equestria: The Official Movie Sourcebook]]'', which expanded upon the history of [[Klugetown]] and [[Mount Aris]] while also shedding light on the new species featured (primarily the [[Parrot]]s) and contained short-stories set in the world of the film.
In addition to the books and novels, [[IDW Publishing]] produced a mini-series of comics entitled ''[[My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel]]'', which told stories leading up to the film, starring [[Capper]], [[Celaeno]], and the [[Storm King]] respectively. The lore and characters of the movie were expanded further in comics such as ''[[My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights]]'' and ''[[My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Season 10]]'', and the story arc, ''[[The Return of Tempest Shadow]]'', though these were not marketed to be apart of the films brand.
Months before the films release, ''[[The Art of My Little Pony: The Movie]]'' was released in August by [[VIZ Media]]. The book contained several pieces of concept art, including several characters and places that didn't make the cut, as well as characters who evolved into the versions used.

==Continuity notes==
* Although many fans expected the movie to exist in a limbo-state of canon, as many animated films based off TV shows were rarely ever referenced in the shows aside from brief cameos, the impact of the [[Storm War]] was made very apparent from the first episode to air after the films release, "[[School Daze]]", which lead into the overarching storyline and new-normal of the final two seasons.
* Additionally, Capper became a major recurring character after the films release, appearing in many comics and starred in the ''[[My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights]]'' series as a member of the titular [[Nightmare Knights]], a group of reformed baddies.
** Celaeno, Tempest Shadow, Skystar and Novo all also became recurring characters, but to less degrees. They all appear in novels in the ''Beyond Equestria'' series, but had few appearances from beyond this point. Novo did however appear in "[[Convocation of the Creatures]]" and "[[Cosmos (storyline)|Cosmos]]" as a fairly important character, and likewise Tempest had a short, two-issue arc entitled "[[The Return of Tempest Shadow]]" dedicated to her. Tempest also starred in Nightmare Knights and played a supporting role in the season ten comics.
* Although Tempest Shadow is an original character, another character with a very similar name and color scheme named [[Fizzy Pop]] was introduced in [[2011]].
* Of the characters introduced in the film, only a handful made appearances in the animated series afterwards, none of them voiced. The Storm King appeared in a story sequence and as an illusion in season eight, while Capper, Tempest Shadow, Queen Novo, and Princess Skystar made appearances in season nine.
