Equestripedia:Blog - Major site updates, 2023

From Equestripedia, the Archives of Equestria!
Henceforth, I will be represented by Blossomforth

Hello, everyone. Amelia here.

As it was recently announced, Miraheze, our hosting provider, will be shutting down. This was alluded too before, but there was inconsistent messages by Miraheze staff and insiders over the severity of the situation. Thankfully, we should have enough time to look for new hosting providers but it really does sadden me that the era of wiki hosting seems to be dying, with only a few for-profit ventures left and very few in the ways of open, non-profit ones.

As said before, Equestripedia will absolutely not be going anywhere. We already have been offered free hosting at another service but I'm weighing my options and will get in contact with the people who host our domain name for their word on the manner. Who knows, maybe this'll serve as a much needed revival this wiki needed.

I think, in the mean time, I will give our wiki a much needed refinement, in making sure the coding for templates are consistent and offering light-and-dark theme options, instead of a single dark theme.

So, I guess some more personal, less filtered thoughts and an update. I tried getting in contact with Grifkuba, as they host the Hanna Barbera wiki but the only contact info I could find was their twitter and they did not respond to a message I sent them a few days ago so I'm starting to think they may be a dead end. I'm currently attempting to get in contact with James Dixon, admin of the HB-grifkuba wiki, so hopefully we may get some assistance there.

If nothing happens, or I get nowhere, I'll start the moving process. We're on a limited clock to get stuff moving, but we still have around two months so we're not in an immediate rush.

Thanks to AWB, I can backup pretty much every image file on the site pretty easily, even without an imagedump from Miraheze, so we're good on that front too.

As said, I'll try to treat this experience as a new beginning. I'll be requesting partnerships with other wikis, those who survive I guess, and other sites to hopefully revive the site. Let's hope it goes well.--Amelia (talk) 15:48, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

I forgot to mention that Miraheze has announced that they're able to stay afloat for the foreseeable future. Still, I'll keep an eye out for preserving the wiki.--Amelia (talk) 16:33, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
