The Black Lava Rock was a stone crafted from the lava of the Volcano of Evil by Eminence the Mountain King to ensure his guardian, Crunch would be indestructible.
As Crunch had no heart, he was an evil and cruel individual who "hated soft things". The stone ensured he would be unable to be defeated under traditional means and thus he had to be defeated through the Heart Stone instead.
Notes
The term "black lava rock" may be based off obsidian, a type of glass.
