The Necronomicon, or "Book of the dead" was a seemingly alive book of dark magic that Sunset Shimmer read. It was housed in the Dark Magic wing of the Royal Library of Canterlot. The book bore a horrible, distorted and ugly semi-humanoid face with leathery "skin".
Behind the scenes
The "Necronomicon" was a book of H.P. Lovecraft's creation, though the design used is based off The Evil Dead instead. The book is a pop-culture icon in its own right, as is the case with several of Lovecraft's mythology.
