My Little Pony: Nightmare Knights is a comic series first released on October 10, 2018 that serves as a direct continuation to the My Little Pony: Legends of Magic storyine, which ended on a cliff-hanger in Legends of Magic Annual 2018. The first issue was drawn by Tony Fleecs and written by Jeremy Whitley, two veterans in the IDW Pony ring.

Much like the series it continues off from, Legends of Magic, Nightmare Knights is a much darker take on the Universe of Friendship is Magic. While still whimsical and lighthearted in many respects, the storyline has several morbid aspects of it, such as the death of an alternate-universe version Princess Luna and the torture of Celestia and villains actively trying to tear apart the world for their amusement. Much like Legends of Magic, the story has shades of Cosmic Horror, with beings beyond mortal comprehension reducing even the strongest beings in Equestria into bestial slaves. In addition, the story has several elements of the type of "cosmic" storylines associated with Marvel Comics, such as the exploration of parallel universes, abstract entities and the fate of the entire multiverse weighing on the shoulders of the heroes.

Publication history

Nightmare Knights was announced in the July of 2018 with three covers.[1] It was officially described the series as "A crazy caper story the likes of which My Little Pony has never seen!".

The series is currently set for a 4-issue release, similarly to My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel.

Creative team

The comics are being written by Jeremy Whitley and drawn by Tony Fleecs, the same artist and writer team behind Legends of Magic (although Legends of Magic had numerous artists, not just Tony) with the covers being done by a variety of artists. The colorists and letterers for issues 3 and 4 are not yet currently known.

World building

Perhaps the biggest contribution to the Universe of Friendship is Magic currently is the introduction of Princess Eris, confirming that Discord is actually apart of a greater "species" of "Lords".

Reception

Issue 1 currently has a "5 star" rating on Comixology.[2]
