Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo (April 27, 1988) is an American singer, rapper and songwriter from Detroit, Michigan, though moved to Houstan, Texas and later Minneapolis, where she began her musical career.
History
Lizzo began rapping in a small part of Houstan known as Alief as a teenager and at the age of 14, she founded the "Cornrow Clique" with her friends. Around this time, she gained her nickname "Lizzo" based off "Lissa" and Jay-Z's Izzo (H.O.V.A.). After graduating from Alief Elsik High School, Lizzo began to study classical music at the University of Houston. At the age of 21, her father passed away and she lived out of her car as she attempted to break into the musical industry.
In 2016, she finally hit commercial success with Coconut Oil.
In 2019, her song Good as Hell, was featured in an ad for My Little Pony: Pony Life, though the song was slightly cut down (though still featured the word "hell") to make it more child-friendly.
