The group fulfills the ''[[My Little Pony]]'' tradition established since ''[[My Little Pony Tales]]'' of a core friend circle as the franchises' main characters and can be considered an incarnation of the [[Mane Six]]. The groups' first appearance was in ''[[My Little Pony: Equestria Girls]]'', with their core roster not being fulfilled until ''[[Equestria Girls: Friendship Games]]''. Chronologically, their first appearance was in the comic story, "[[Equestria Girls (comic story)|Equestria Girls]]", which featured their chronicled their first encounters with one another.
