'''Otaku''' (オタク) is a [[Japanese language|Japanese]] term to describe someone with an obsessive interest in a certain subject or field, but is often used to characterize an individual with a love for [[anime]] or [[manga]]. In [[Equestria]] and its {{EQG|Equestria|human counterpart}}, individuals with interest in anime were relatively rare, but not unheard of. Even more so since in Equestria, anime has been around for at least 1,000 years.

The oldest known otaku was [[King Sombra]], who was apparently a fan of ''[[Attack on Titan]]'' in his youth (some 1,000 years prior to the [[Era of Harmony]]).<ref>{{C|FIE|1|''Sombra''}}</ref> Assuming the characters {{FIM|Fluttershy}} drew during [[Nightmare Night]] were from in-universe anime series, she may have also been an otaku.<ref>{{CAR|FIM|Scare Master}}</ref> In the human world, a popular manga series akin to ''[[Sailor Moon]]'' was seen at the [[Anime club]].
