The Wedding of Lyra Heartstrings and Bon Bon was a marriage ceremony held sometime before the second coronation of Twilight Sparkle that united the couple in matrimony.

History

Background

Just gals being pals

Prior to the twos meeting, Lyra lived in the capital city of Canterlot and Bon Bon in Ponyville, both of which appeared to live in those cities since they were children[1][2] It was unclear when exactly Lyra moved to Ponyville, if she ever truly did, but she became a frequent visitor of the town either around the same time or before Twilight moved into Golden Oak Library.[3] It's unclear when the two first met, but they were seen together as early as the first few days after Twilight's activity in the town.[4][5]

Their first known interaction was during the time where Razer began to sleep in a mountain cave near Ponyville, threatening to cover all of Equestria with his smoke merely by sleeping. By this point, they already seemed like friends as they happily looked at one another.[6]

Over the years, the two had many friendly interactions and by the time of the Bugbear incident in Ponyville, the two considered each other to be best friends.[7] Soon after Bon Bon revealed her true identity as a S.M.I.L.E. agent, Lyra ended up getting caught in the organization as well, becoming an agent beside her best friend[8] and the two had many adventures together[9][10]

The proposal and marriage

At some point, the two developed romantic feelings towards each other and both planned to propose to each other on the same exact day.[11] The two later got married and appeared to be living happily decades later.[12]

Behind the scenes

The marriage was the first LGBT union we see in the series. While gay couples have appeared prior such as Aunt Holiday and Aunt Lofty, it was not confirmed if they were married, or just dating. It also confirmed the long-sense speculated romance between the two mares.

From the perspective of a layout artist, the reason Lyra and Bon Bon were frequently seen together in earlier seasons was simply because they looked good together aesthetically (for their complimenting color palettes). Over time, the pairing of them together for aesthetic reasons evolved into deliberately placing them together as fan service, and later this was noticed by not just storyboard artists (purposely drawing them in some storyboard backgrounds), but also writers and directors.
