A character of the week (sometimes less inclusively known as monster of the week) is a term to refer to any character, creature, species or group who serve as central figures for an episode or storyline and often do not factor into the continuity afterwards. In longer running media however, characters of the week can blossom outwards into becoming recurring and even major characters if well received enough by fans or creators.
Not all one-off characters are characters of the week, likewise not all characters of the week are show-stoppers either. They are, however, characters who greatly affect the plot of the self-contained story they are featured in. Characters of the week were mostly prominent in My Little Pony and the first two seasons of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. My Little Pony Tales with its somewhat rigid continuity rarely had one-off characters. Likewise, many of the characters of the week in Friendship is Magic would soon transition to recurring characters and may not be considered characters of the week in that fashion. Nonetheless, they are counted here.
