Friendship is Magic #24

King Anubis was a Jackal from Anugypt who became King, apparently through embracing dark magic similar to that used by Nightmare Moon.

After "becom[ing] really powerful and mean and shadowy all of a sudden", King Anubis enslaved the Anugyptian cats and ponies, rapidly securing rule over the kingdom. However, Discord, with whom he was acquainted, helped Baast establish a rebellion against Anubis. Discord would later claim that it had been a natural reaction to the order Anubis had imposed upon his subjects. Discord escaped Anubis' wrath, only to cross paths with him again while time-traveling in the company of Fluttershy and the Cutie Mark Crusaders.

Holding Discord's alliance with Baast-and his theft of Anubis' "favorite bone" against him, Anubis prepared to have Discord and his companions thrown into a dungeon. However, before he could sentence them, Baast and her rebels attacked, providing a distraction that allowed Discord's party to escape unharmed. Sweetie Belle, having recognized the parallels between Anubis and Nightmare Moon, advised Baast to employ the Magic of Friendship against Anubis. It is unknown how the resulting conflict played out.

Behind the scenes[edit]

Anubis was a deity of Egyptian mythology. Anubis was his Ancient Greek language Greek name, while his original name was jnpw. Anubis was the god of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld and was generally depicted as either a canine or a man with a canine head. Another Egyptian god, Tehuti has appeared in the Friendship is Magic continuity as well.

The character of King Anubis appeared in Friendship is Magic #24, written by Jeremy Whitley with art by Amy Mebberson and is one of the two known rulers of Anugypt, the other being Queen Cleopatrot.
