Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree

Template:Animation Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree is the fourth and so far final film in the Equestria Girls, as the series would continue as a series of shorts and specials rather than films. The film introduces Timber Spruce, a love interest for Twilight and his sister, Gloriosa Daisy, the two owners of Camp Everfree.

Story

Restless night

On the mourning of the Camp Everfree Field Trip, Twilight Sparkle was suffering from a horrible nightmare involving Midnight Sparkle. Her friends who were picking her up managed to wake her up however, but as she was getting ready, Midnight Sparkle appeared and destroyed the dimension around Twilight. However, this all turned out to be a nightmare as she and everyone else was on the bus to Camp Everfree.

Camp Everfree

While at the tent, all the students encounter Gloriosa Daisy and her brother, Timber Spruce as they introduce them to the camp. Off the bat, more observant students pick up on tension between the two as they quietly bicker behind the scenes while Gloriosa Daisy gives her best, if somewhat forced, attempt to pep up the attendees. During this moment, Timber and Twilight develop crushes on each other when they lock eyes, causing Twilight to blush. After the introductions, the two counselors give out tent assignments. When Timber gives Twilight the Sapphire Tent, he remarks that it's the best tent, because it has her. Twilight and Timber hit it off due to their nerdy personalities and interest in mundane facts.

Later, Twilight's friends all began to gush over her first romantic interactions with Timber. A little after this, Filthy Rich drove up in his limousine and made cryptic remarks about the camp. Soon after that, all the camp attendees began to settle in their tents. Twilight and Sunset joked around in theirs while Sunset teased Twilight about her crush and talked to her about the Filthy Rich guy. While looking for Sunset's sunscreen, Twilight accidentally uses her magic to levitate several objects throughout the tent. Sunset thought the event was amazing, while Twilight thought it was terrible instead. Believing it was the work of Midnight Sparkle, Twilight encouraged Sunset to not bring up the magic to anyone else and left their tent. Afterwards, Sunset tried to use similar magic, but was unable to do so.

Camp Gift

Around this time, the councilors announce the Camp Gift, a tradition in which campers build or improve upon something so future campers may appreciate it. Celestia chimes in that the sundial was her and Luna's contribution, while other contributions were made by other camp groups.

Sometime later, several of the campers begin to hang out at the Camp Everfree Beach and dock by the river. While there, Twilight Sparkle steps on weak-wood that collapses under her, though she was rescued by Timber Spruce. Celestia and Luna determine the dock to be a safety hazard and discourage students from using it as such, but Applejack and Rainbow Dash both decide to make creating a new dock to be their Camp Gift.

Celestia approved their idea and so the campers went to work. Applejack made her own hammer while Timber made lanterns out of Solar Powered Garden Lights. Twilight and Timber bonded over the lanterns, and later noodle art. As it was getting dark, Celestia and Gloriosa stopped the daily progress and have everyone gather around the fire to eat smores and tell scary stories.

Spooky Stories

Rarity was the first to tell a spooky story - though it was of course about a fashion disaster in which a lady wore purple and burgundy colored clothes. The entire campsite was bored senseless and Applejack and Rainbow Dash joked that the scariest part of the story was whether or not she'd tell it again. Luna stepped in asking if anyone else had a story to share, leading to Timber Spruce to begin telling the tell of Gaia Everfree.

Timber told the story of his great-grandparents, Old Spice and Dove, who discovered the beauty of the Everfree Forest and hired two men, "Lawrence and "Barney" to help them construct the camp. However, while they were building, they were confronted by an entity known as Gaia Everfree, who demanded they leave the forest. Old Spice and Dove begged to stay, for they wanted to share the camp with others, and Gaia took mercy on them, demanding that they couldn't couldn't keep it forever, for some day, she would return. As he said this, Gloriosa appeared behind him, her huge eyes scaring the campers into believing it was Everfree herself.

Snips, Snails, Fluttershy and even Rainbow Dash were all scared by the story, though Applejack believed it couldn't be real. Dash interjected that it could've been a monster from Equestria that booted itself into their world like with the Dazzlings, but Applejack still believed it to just be a story Timber made up to scare them. Rarity followed by saying that they had to deal with their fair share of monsters in the past, accidentally offending Twilight with the Friendship Games incident, hurting her and causing her to head to bed early.

Strange Things

The next night, Twilight had another nightmare about Midnight Sparkle and levitated her bed and several of her possessions in the process. Sunset woke up thinking something was wrong and instantly adopted a kung-fu stance during this. When Twilight woke up, she dropped everything and the two went outside. Meanwhile, Sandalwood and Derpy were sailing on a boat together, though they couldn't get any wind until they suddenly went super fast and crashed into the dock, breaking half of it. Though they were okay, the progress on the dock was significantly decreased. Fearing that she caused the problems herself, Twilight ran into the woods and sung to herself.

Meanwhile, Sunset Shimmer woke up Spike to search for Twilight. By the time they found her, she had struck up a conversation with Timber Spruce, who she encountered on a Nature Walk Trail near the campsite. They walked back into camp while Rarity and Octavia Melody were rock climbing, with Applejack spotting Rarity. Rarity was going slowly, causing Rainbow Dash to grow impatient and ran off, and a brief second later, a small earthquake-like event transpired. While gone, Applejack's magic activated and she temporarily gained super strength, causing Rarity's harness to go crazy. When she finally managed to get to the grown, Applejack tried to help her but Rarity pushed her aside, with her magic activating, she pushed Applejack several feet into nearby bushes.

Sunset was ecstatic that they were all getting magic powers though Twilight was worried they were going to hurt themselves with it. Shortly afterwards, Pinkie Pie caused an explosion of cookie dough in the mess hall which caused Fluttershy to scream, causing Sunset and Twilight to run to her in concern. Fluttershy went to get paper towels to clean the mess up while Mr. Bird came to get them for her as she couldn't reach them. Applejack and Rarity came into the mess hall telling the others of their powers and later, Rainbow Dash came zooming in, apparently going all the way back to Canterlot as she crashed into the mess hall. Sunset remarks that she hasn't gotten any powers yet and tries to bring up Twilight's powers, but doesn't went Twilight urges her not to.

As this went down, Gloriosa entered the mess hall with towels and clean clothes for Applejack. The girls initially believe her to be Gaia Everfree and freak. Meanwhile, Filthy Rich returned and several campers had various minor accidents, causing Gloriosa to grow increasingly annoyed, but still managed to keep a largely positive attitude about the situation. Applejack and the others decided to ignore their new magic for now and just try to enjoy the camp for the remainder of their days there.

Make Things Better

The following night, Twilight tried to sneak out of camp with Spike, but Sunset caught up to her and accidentally discovered her power to look into peoples minds and memories. The two soon encounter Timber Spruce wielding an axe, but it turns out he was only cutting trees for firewood for the next day, feeling annoyed as if he doesn't, he fears that Gloriosa will use it against him later. The group chat about Everfree and as Timber and Twilight leave, Sunset comes to the conclusion that Timber is actually Gaia Everfree, making up a fake story about a monster, making it appear that the creature exists and scaring others so he can sell the camp to Filthy Rich.

The morning, the girls were working on the dock. Rarity was working on her fashion, while Applejack was hammering the wood and Rainbow Dash was gathering, however, they were all going at unoptimal rates as they feared using their powers would ruin the whole thing. Sunset swung by the dock to help them and tell them about her powers, entering Pinkie Pie's mind to see nothing but a candy world. She sung a song and as they were singing, they embraced the powers and finished the dock.

Defiantly Up to Something

However, Sunset grew suspicious of Timber once again and swung by the Camp Office and heard him and his sister arguing. Sunset then came across Flash Sentry who tried to thank her for her tough love and wanted to see if he and her could become friends but she bailed on him as soon as she saw Timber entering the woods. Derpy came to comfort Flash as Sunset followed Spruce to the Rock Quarry and texted Twilight to come, believing she finally had evidence that Timber was up to no good.

Twilight and Spike meet up with Sunset and enter the cave. Sunset remarks that she thinks Timber is up to no good, but Gloriosa soon reveals herself to be the true culprit. Sunset touches her to read her memories, realizing that she came across the Goedes and used their magic to perform all the strange occurrences that happened around camp and that most of Timber's suspicious activities were covering for her. However, Gloriosa tied up the three who followed her and used the last two geodes to transform into a monstrous form of herself as she left the cave and covered the entry up.

Ending

Gloriosa surrounded the entire camp in her ferns. Most campers managed to take refuge in the Mess Hall protected by Celestia and Luna, but the Equestria Girls were trapped. Being somewhat jaded to events like this by now, they discussed their plan for action. Twilight eventually manages to save the day by using her powers as a force of good and save everyone, including Gloriosa. Gloriosa, however, admits defeat and believes losing the camp would be for the best. The Equestria Girls encourage her otherwise and manage to organize a fund raiser to save the camp once and for all by having a concert in the Crystal Cave.

Continuity

The film serves as a midquel to Equestria Girls: Magical Movie Night, as the fundraiser subplot in that special leads directly into the main plot of this film, likewise, the Dock subplot of the film leads into the later events of that special.

Timber Spruce would become a recurring character in Equestria Girls: Better Together, with his most major role being in "Star Crossed", with an important but background role in "Twilight Under the Stars". He also appeared as a picture frame in "Mad Twience".

Controversy

Some fans believed that Timber Spruce was an adult, given his status as co-camp owner, and thus believed him to be far to old to be romantically interested in Twilight Sparkle. Of course, this is in a long line of fans adding context when their wasn't any, as Timber Spruce acted and looked just like a regular teenager. Director later had to say that Timber was around 17 years old, which at most puts him at a few months older than Twilight Sparkle, as she presumably turned seventeen in Equestria Girls: Better Together but according to the storyboard confirms in the Legend of Everfree script, Timber is 16 years old and described as "good-natured outdoors-y goofball - think Chris Pratt" and Gloriosa is 21 years old and described as "cheerful, organized , earthy type ". This leads to an open to fan interpretation for fans about their ages and other characters.

Character notes

  • The film marks the first major appearance of Watermelody. Though she doesn't speak, her artistic abilities play a major contribution to the Dock storyline.
  • The film marks the first and only known speaking line for Derpy. Also, the film implies Derpy may be friends with Snips and Snails, as she worked on lanterns with them. In addition, the film possibly began the relationship between Derpy and Bulk Biceps, as they were seen dating in future works.

In other media

The film received a novelization entitled Equestria Girls: The Legend of Everfree: Save Our Camp!, written by Louise Alexander.
