Since the mid 1980s, comic books have become a major part of the My Little Pony series. In the early days, comics were used to tell simple stories and readers could requests new stories with their favorite pony characters. In the IDW Publishing era, readers could no longer request stories and the stories themselves generally became far more complex, sometimes even spanning multiple issues and medium.

Overview

The names you'll be hearing here the most are undoubtedly are Fleetway/London Editions and IDW Publishing, as they've handled the lionshare of My Little Pony comic publications, with the former handling Generation 1 comics such as the (creatively titled) My Little Pony Comic and My Little Pony and Friends and the latter handling 90% of Generation 4 comics. Other noteworthy names include Panini Comics, which has handled localization of Generation 4 comics and Egmont, which has produced a number of comic stories for European magazines. Other, minor comic producing companies over the years include Tokyopop and Pucchigumi, both of which have produced manga for My Little Pony.

Comics have of coursed appeared in non-zine type media. The Elements of Harmony, Vol II featured a comic retelling of "Friendship is Magic - Part 2" and Tails of Equestria: The Storytelling Game featured a one-page comic story that served as the prologue to "The Pet Predicament".
